Job summary

Glen Eira City Council invites an experienced Coordinator Cyber Defence to lead the council's cyber security defence capability. You will govern risk, threat detection and incident response while guiding improvements across security controls, technologies and external partnerships.

You will work with technology teams and stakeholders to build a proactive security culture and strengthen organisational resilience through practical guidance and leadership.

Qualifications

Job description

This is a rare opportunity to join a progressive metropolitan council at a pivotal point in its technology transformation journey. As Coordinator Cyber Defence, you will provide strategic and operational leadership for Council's cyber security defence capability, ensuring Council's technology environment, information assets and digital services are protected against evolving cyber threats. Reporting to the Head of Technology & Cyber Security, you will lead a team responsible for security monitoring, threat detection, incident response, vulnerability management and security control optimisation.

This is a hands-on leadership role for an experienced cyber security professional who can strengthen operational controls, improve cyber incident readiness and provide clear, practical advice on cyber risk. You will work closely with technology teams, business stakeholders, managed security providers and external cyber security partners to build a proactive security culture and support organisational resilience.

The Opportunity

You will play a pivotal role in leading Council's cyber defence capability, including governance, risk management, threat and vulnerability management incident response and continual improvement. This includes maintaining incident response plans, playbooks and procedures, overseeing security technologies such as SIEM, XDR/EDR and cloud security platforms, and supporting alignment with Council's cyber security strategy, risk framework and Essential Eight maturity objectives.

Working across the organisation, you will provide authoritative cyber security advice, monitor emerging threats and intelligence, coordinate assurance activities and develop practical improvement initiatives that strengthen Council's security maturity and resilience. You will also lead, coach and develop cyber defence staff while managing external providers and specialist resources.

About You

You are an experienced cyber security leader with strong practical knowledge of cyber security operations, threat detection, vulnerability management, incident response and security control optimisation.

You have demonstrated experience leading cyber security operations or cyber defence capabilities within a complex organisation, with the ability to develop technical teams, coordinate internal and external resources and improve operational readiness.

You bring sound judgement, strong stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to communicate cyber security risks, incidents and technical issues to technical teams, executives and business stakeholders.

To be successful, you will bring:

• Demonstrated experience leading cyber security operations, security monitoring, incident response or cyber defence capabilities within a complex organisation
• Strong practical knowledge of cyber security operations, threat detection, vulnerability management and incident response practices
• Experience managing security technologies such as Microsoft Sentinel, Microsoft Defender XDR, Defender for Endpoint, Entra ID security or equivalent platforms
• Experience leading and developing technical cyber security teams and coordinating internal and external security resources
• Strong understanding of cyber security frameworks including the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) Essential Eight, NIST Cybersecurity Framework and ISO 27001/27002
• Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to communicate cyber security risks and technical issues clearly
• Tertiary qualifications in Cyber Security, Information Technology, Computer Science or a related discipline, or demonstrated equivalent professional experience
• Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) certification, with CISSP (or working towards) or GIAC certifications highly regarded
