Job description

Work with Us/In Their Words

Australia’s Northwest

WA Country Health Service is seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Consultant General Surgeon to join our clinical team at Broome Hospital in the stunning Kimberley region of Western Australia.

This is a unique opportunity to deliver high-quality surgical care, make a real difference to the health of local and Indigenous communities, and enjoy an enviable lifestyle in one of Australia’s most spectacular coastal settings.

If you’re looking for a role where your expertise makes a lasting difference in the community while offering both professional growth and personal reward, we’d love to hear from you.

This is a recruitment pool to fill Permanent (Sessional, Part-Time or Full Time) and Fixed Term (Sessional, Part-Time or Full Time) appointments. Fixed Term appointments include the possibility of extension(s) and/or permanency.

We currently have 1 FTE vacant and can provide a Fixed-Term Full-Time contract for five years, with the possibility of permanency.

About The Role

As the largest hospital in the Kimberley region, Broome Hospital offers a diverse and challenging case mix. With approximately 25,000 presentations to the Emergency Department (ED) annually, you will be exposed to a wide range of acuity levels and conditions.

The theatre complex in Broome consists of a Day Procedure Unit and 2 theatres. CT scanning and ultrasonography diagnostic imaging services are available on site, along with a busy pathology laboratory. Anaesthetic services are provided by highly skilled GP anaesthetists who cover the High Dependency Unit, the Maternity Unit and ED Critical Care.

In addition to your clinical responsibilities, you will have a unique chance to make a difference in Indigenous Health. With a significant Aboriginal population, you can contribute to improving the healthcare outcomes for Indigenous communities in the region.

Collaboration is an essential aspect of our regional surgical team. You will work closely with another full time and a part time Consultant Surgeon in Broome. The Junior team consists of a Service Registrar, Resident Medical Officer, and Intern.

This teaching position allows you to mentor and guide doctors in training, sharing your expertise and knowledge. Broome Hospital is highly valued by the Postgraduate Medical Council of WA for the case mix exposure and experience gained by Doctors in Training in their surgical term.

You will participate in the shared departmental on-call roster, ensuring that our surgical team is available to respond to emergencies as the regional referral centre. Additionally, you will be required to undertake short periods of outreach within the region on a regular basis, providing essential surgical services to remote areas.

Whilst based in Broome, there may be a requirement to work across other hospitals within the Kimberley region and therefore a travel component as part of the role.

About You

You are a dedicated and highly skilled Consultant General Surgeon who brings not only clinical expertise, but also a genuine passion for making a difference in regional and remote healthcare.

With experience in managing a broad range of surgical presentations, you are adaptable, resourceful, and thrive in environments where every day brings new challenges.

Your approach to care is collaborative and patient-focused, and you value the opportunity to work as part of a multidisciplinary team. You are motivated by the chance to contribute to Aboriginal health outcomes and understand the importance of culturally safe and respectful practice.

About The Region

The Kimberley is Western Australia’s northernmost region, with a coastline closer to South-East Asia than Perth, offering a unique mix of lifestyle and adventure.

Living in Broome offers an unparalleled lifestyle, where you’ll enjoy tropical beaches, quality schools, and a welcoming community, making it a great place to live and raise a family and enjoy a relaxed yet fulfilling life.

What's In It For You

Enjoy generous entitlements, including up to 4 weeks annual leave, 3 weeks professional development leave, and additional leave for cultural, compassionate, or long service (13 weeks after 10 years).

  • Unforgettable Lifestyle: Discover the Kimberley's natural wonders, from pristine beaches to rugged landscapes, the Kimberley offers unparalleled adventure and relaxation opportunities.

  • Relocation Support: If you are coming to work from overseas or interstate:
    • You will be eligible to be reimbursed for costs related to the relocation of yourself and your immediate family (conditions apply and subject to regional approval).
    • We can offer a range of employee-sponsored work visas including PR (conditions apply).
Eligibility Requirements
  • Due to the limited supervision capacity at Broome Hospital, supervised practice placements for Specialist International Medical Graduates (SIMGs) cannot be easily supported. Preference will therefore be given to applicants currently residing in Australia who:
    • hold unrestricted General Registration with the Medical Board of Australia, and
    • have at least two years of clinical experience in Australia or a recognised Competent Authority country.
  • Exceptional overseas candidates may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Completion of upper and lower GI endoscopy training, accredited by the Gastroenterological Society of Australia (GESA), is required.
  • Australian citizenship or permanent residency is an essential requirement for applicants to be considered for permanent positions in the public sector. Applicants on a visa can be appointed on a fixed-term contract.
