Job summary

Barminco, part of the Perenti Group, is seeking an experienced Communications Technician for a full-time underground role near Canberra. The position involves installing, commissioning, and maintaining underground communication infrastructure on a FIFO roster (7/7 or 14/14 from Perth), contributing to safe, productive mining operations.

Qualifications

• Certificate III/IV in Telecommunications, Electronics, Information Technology or equivalent is required.
• Current ACMA Open Cabling Registration with Structured Cabling and Coaxial Cabling endorsements.
• Experience in mining, resources or heavy industrial sectors, preferably underground.
• Proven installation, commissioning, and maintenance of fibre optics, leaky feeder, digital radios, and wireless tech.
• Willingness to obtain Working at Heights and Confined Space Entry certifications.

Responsibilities

• Install, commission, and maintain underground communications infrastructure (digital radios, fibre, leaky feeder, Wi‑Fi, BLE).
• Support deployment of mining tech platforms (fleet management, proximity detection, tele-remote ops, environmental monitoring).
• Assist tele-remote mining systems for stable, low-latency comms between underground equipment and surface control.
• Install, test, and troubleshoot IoT devices, sensors, and telemetry equipment.
• Collaborate with mining operations, electrical engineering, and IT/OT teams to support edge computing and gateways.
• Monitor and optimise network performance for autonomous operations and real-time data streaming.
• Provide technical leadership, guidance, and mentorship across operations.

Job Description

Barminco is seeking an experienced and motivated Communications Technician to join the team on a full-time basis (7/7 or 14/14 FIFO ROSTER ex Perth).

Your role is integral to delivering safe, productive and efficient underground mining operations while contributing to the continued success and expansion of our project.

What your day to day looks like:

• Install, commission, and maintain underground communications infrastructure including digital radio systems, fibre optic networks, leaky feeder systems, Wi-Fi mesh, and BLE technologies to ensure reliable mine-wide connectivity in harsh underground environments.
• Support the deployment, integration, and fault-finding of mining technology platforms including fleet management systems, proximity detection systems, tele-remote operations, and environmental monitoring solutions.
• Assist in the implementation and ongoing maintenance of tele-remote mining systems, ensuring stable, secure, and low-latency communication between underground mobile equipment and surface control facilities.
• Conduct installation, commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting of underground IoT devices, smart sensors, and telemetry equipment, ensuring integrity of data acquisition and transmission systems.
• Collaborate with mining operations, electrical engineering, and IT/OT teams to support edge computing devices, industrial gateways, and network infrastructure within integrated mining automation and IoT environments.
• Monitor, optimise, and maintain communications and IoT network performance to support autonomous operations, real-time data streaming, operational technology systems, and data-driven decision-making across underground mining activities.
• Provide technical leadership, guidance, and mentorship across mining operations to support the successful design, deployment, and optimisation of technology solutions aligned with operational objectives, automation strategies, and business performance outcomes.
• Possess a Certificate III or IV in Telecommunications, Electronics, Information Technology, or a closely related field (or equivalent industry experience).
• Current Open Cabling Registration (ACMA-compliant) with relevant endorsements such as:
• Structured Cabling
• Coaxial Cabling
• Demonstrated experience in a communications or technology support role within the mining, resources, or heavy industrial sectors, ideally in an underground environment.
• Proven experience in the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of communications infrastructure such as fibre optics, leaky feeder networks, digital radios, and wireless technologies (e.g. Wi-Fi mesh, LTE, BLE & LPWA).
• Current Working at Heights and Confined Space Entry certification (or willingness to obtain).
