Desert Channels Queensland is a community-based natural resource management (NRM) organisation delivering projects and services across Queenslands Lake Eyre Basin.
For nearly 20 years, we've worked with landholders and communities to invest in soil, water, pasture and biodiversity across our region. Our experienced team delivers projects spanning weed and feral animal management, springs, mapping and data, sustainable agriculture, threatened species and land condition. Based in Longreach, we're a not-for-profit delivering dozens of projects across 51 million hectares of Western Queensland.
Position Objective:
The Communications Officer leads the production of a wide range of communications across digital, written, social and traditional media. The role works closely with knowledge experts, landholders, journalists, stakeholders and internal staff to identify and deliver stories about NRM issues and DCQ projects, communicating impact, shaping conversations, influencing behaviour and funding, and reinforcing DCQs credibility, visibility and reputation as a trusted deliverer of NRM projects across Western Queensland.
The role is responsible for producing informative and engaging content, as well as developing strategies, communications plans, campaigns, resources and legacy products through collaboration with staff.
Key Responsibilities:
Produce timely articles, social posts, photos, videos and other communications materials showcasing programs, projects, events and activities.
Build relationships with media and project partners, pitching stories across radio, print, TV, digital and social media.
Plan and deliver informational, educational and behaviour-change campaigns on natural resource management and environmental issues.
Apply the Brand and Visual Style Guide to ensure consistent, high-quality communications and strengthen brand recognition.
Design and produce flyers, promotional materials, signage, position papers and other visual communications.
Assist with the development and design of corporate documents, including the Annual Report, Strategic Plan and NRM Plan.
Develop project Communications Plans and oversee the organisation’s broader communications strategy.
Provide communications advice to the CEO and prepare regular Communications Reports for the Board.
Build professional relationships with communications staff across government, the NRM sector and relevant organisations.
Present communications resources to staff and support the distribution of online and printed materials.
Manage social media, including content planning, scheduling, publishing, monitoring and audience engagement.
Manage and maintain the website, ensuring content is current, accessible, user-friendly and aligned with communications objectives.
Ensure communications comply with government and stakeholder branding, logo, acknowledgement and approval requirements.
This role supports Desert Channels' strategic aims of investing in natural resources (pasture, soil, water and biodiversity) in the Queensland section of the Lake Eyre Basin. Education / Qualifications
A relevant degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, Digital Media or a related discipline, and/or demonstrated relevant experience in communications, journalism, marketing and/or public relations is highly desirable.

Has an understanding of natural resource management, land management or issues affecting remote and regional Australia (desirable).
