Job summary

Saab Australia is seeking a Communications Systems Engineer to join the DDG Combat System Test and Commissioning group. You will support development and upgrade of maintenance manuals, test plans, and test schedules for CS communication systems, and assist during V&V phases of the DDG upgrade program.

You will review system design material, generate maintenance instructions, and participate in readiness reviews. Flexible hybrid work options and a 9-day fortnight are considered for this role.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or higher in Mechanical/Electrical/Computer Science or related field with defence experience preferred.
  • Strong background in System Engineering, Integration, Test and V&V.

The opportunity

Saab Australia is an industry participant in the Combat Systems Integration – Integrated Project Team (CSI-IPT). The CSI-IPT forms a collaborative enterprise organisation to execute scopes of work across Hobart Class Destroyer (SEA4000 Phase 6 and other related Destroyer Capability Enhancement (DCE) upgrades) and the Hunter Class Frigates (HCFs - SEA5000 Phase 1).

The role

The Communications Systems Engineer will be part of the DDG Combat System (CS) Test and Commissioning group, and will work within the Communications team. The Communications System Engineer will work in a highly experienced team and will initially support the development and upgrade of maintenance manuals, installation inspections, test plans and test schedules for the maintenance, installation, set to work and Verification and Validation (V&V) of CS communication systems. As the program transitions further into the V&V phase of DDG upgrade program, the Communications System Engineer will provide support to the V&V activities through each test phase of the program. Further, the successful candidate will:

  • Review CS communication system design material.
  • Generate maintenance instructions for the new or upgraded CS communication systems.
  • Generate test plans and test procedures for the new or upgraded CS communication systems.
  • Prepare for and support the execution of major program milestone reviews such as system readiness reviews and test readiness reviews.
  • Conduct installation inspections, functional testing and acceptance testing for the CS communication systems.
  • Support the troubleshooting of CS communication systems faults.
  • Assist the CS communications team in the maintenance of the CS communication systems.
  • Be the subject matter expert for CS communication subsystems.

Flexible work arrangements such as hybrid work from home / office and a 9-day fortnight will be considered for this role.

About you

Your skills and experience will include:

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline (Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field etc.), and/or equivalent relevant experience (preferably within the defence industry).
  • Proven background in System Engineering, Integration, Test and V&V.
  • Background in Military Communications, RAN or RN communications, voice / data / radio products is desirable.
  • Up to 4 years’ experience in Engineering experience prior to this role.
  • Sound understanding of systems engineering principles and practices.
  • Familiarity with complex systems (e.g. military systems) or related defence technologies (desirable).
  • Familiarity of System Engineering in an ASDEFCON context (desirable).

Applicants must be Australian citizens and hold or be able to obtain an Australian Defence Security Clearance to NV1 level.
