Overview

Deliver mental health and wellbeing services to improve student wellbeing and learning outcomes.

MacKillop Catholic College is a co-educational Years 7 to 12 Catholic secondary school of approximately 750 students located in Mornington on Hobart’s Eastern Shore. The College invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced persons for the ongoing, term-time only position of College Counsellor to deliver mental health and wellbeing services to improve student wellbeing and learning outcomes.

About The Role

The College Counsellor is actively involved in promoting policies, practices and programs that promote student welfare, individual development and wellbeing. The work involves counselling, consultation, assessment, case management and liaison with agencies and other professionals. This is an exciting opportunity for a proactive, skilled individual who enjoys a varied workload and thrives in a supportive, community-focused environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver standard professional services to assist MacKillop College to maximise the learning outcomes of individuals and groups of students.
  • Provide prevention, intervention and postvention practices to support individuals and whole school populations.
  • Case-management and coordination of the provision of services across multidisciplinary teams for intervention programs for students with high and/or complex needs.
  • Apply professional skills and knowledge to identify, assess and improve mental health, learning and behavioural outcomes for students in collaboration with school personnel, parents/caregivers and other agencies.
  • Referral processes.
  • Contribute to the development of, and planning for, students with high and/or complex learning needs by assisting in the design of individual education plans.
  • Apply evidence-based interventions to promote psychological wellbeing, social, emotional and behavioural development, and to improve educational and psychosocial outcomes.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of targeted school-based student support services and programs in collaboration with other staff, relevant professionals and parents/caregivers to support individuals and whole school populations.
  • Provide counselling, therapy and programs for individuals and groups.
  • Provide professional learning and wellbeing resources to build capacity of schools and families to improve students’ learning and development and wellbeing outcomes.
  • Deliver personal and/or social skills education to groups of students.
  • Assist with the development of school wellbeing policies and procedures.
  • Plan for, respond, and assist the school in its response, to critical incidents and emergencies.
About You

As a qualified Counsellor you will have the following:

  • A PACFA approved/accredited program of study such as a Bachelor degree in a relevant field (e.g. education and/or health and human services) and specialist training in Counselling or Psychotherapy.
  • Eligibility for PACFA membership.
  • Current and satisfactory National Police Criminal History Check (NPCHC).
  • Valid Working with Vulnerable People Registration.
  • Until such time as the professions of social work and counselling are registered through a statutory regulatory model, it is a requirement that an employee at Wellbeing Level 3 or 4 who meets relevant qualifications also meets probity, qualification and practice standards set out by professional associations:
    • Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) for social workers
    • Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) for counsellors

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience and in accordance with the Tasmanian Catholic Education Single Enterprise Agreement 2024.
