Job description

Lead Australia’s most iconic cultural institution

This is a rare opportunity to lead an institution of exceptional cultural, civic and economic significance. As Chief Executive Officer of the Sydney Opera House, you will be an influential cultural leader and steward of a World Heritage precinct that is integral to the cultural life and identity of Sydney, NSW and Australia.

The Opera House is a world-renowned performing arts centre and an invaluable community asset, playing a vital role in the night-time and visitor economies. In shaping its next chapter, you will advance its legacy as a place where culture, creativity, community and commerce come together to create lasting public value. Each year, the Opera House welcomes more than 10 million visitors and hosts about 1,850 performances and events. It generates about 90% of its operating revenue through commercial activity and private giving, balancing artistic purpose, public impact and financial sustainability.

Lead a global icon – guide one of the world’s most significant cultural, tourism and creative institutions, extending its influence across Australia and internationally.

Advance artistic innovation and leadership – strengthen NSW’s cultural reputation by championing Australian creativity and connecting audiences with exceptional international artists.

Deliver and build on the Everyone’s House vision – lead a high-performing organisation committed to audience growth, inclusion, First Nations leadership, cultural participation and long-term sustainability.

Shape the future of an extraordinary precinct – oversee a diverse and complex operation spanning performing arts, tourism, hospitality, security, technology and public engagement, while leading major heritage and capital renewal programs.

Build trusted relationships and influence at the highest levels – work closely with government, the Sydney Opera House Trust, resident companies, the arts, cultural and tourism sectors, donors, partners and the broader community in a highly visible leadership role.

About you

You will be an accomplished CEO or senior leader with a record of leading a large, complex and high-profile organisation. You will bring exceptional stakeholder and governance capability, commercial acumen, experience overseeing major capital programs, and a genuine passion for the arts and the public purpose of the Sydney Opera House. Above all, you will be an inclusive and inspiring leader who can unite people behind a clear and ambitious vision.
