Job summary

Black Star Pastry is seeking a skilled pastry chef to lead the Strawberry Watermelon Cake section, balancing hands-on production with team development in a fast-paced kitchen.

You will work alongside our Kitchen Leadership team to uphold the high standards that make Black Star Pastry renowned, mentoring staff and ensuring consistent, precision-driven outputs in a permanent full-time role.

Qualifications

• Senior Pastry Chef or equivalent with leadership experience.
• CDP (Centre of Dessert Production) experience preferred.
• Experience in a fast-paced, production kitchen with high-volume output.

Responsibilities

• Lead the Strawberry Watermelon Cake section with hands-on production and team development.
• Plan daily workflows and coordinate production to meet demand and quality standards.
• Monitor ingredients, adjust processes, and ensure traceability and consistency.
• Collaborate with Kitchen Leadership to drive brand quality and efficiency.
• Mentor and develop junior team members to build a strong pastry team.

This is an opportunity to take ownership of one of Australia's most recognisable cakes, bringing together technical precision, production know-how and people leadership to deliver the quality our customers know and love.

Working alongside our experienced and supportive Kitchen Leadership team, you'll play a hands-on role in keeping production running smoothly, developing your team and ensuring every cake meets the standard that has made Black Star Pastry famous.

This is a permanent full-time role for a suitably skilled candidate with unrestricted working rights.

A day in the life of this role looks a bit like this.

You’ll take the lead on our Strawberry Watermelon Cake section, balancing hands-on production with the coordination and development of your team.

From planning daily workflows and keeping production on track to monitoring quality, managing ingredients and responding to changing demand, you’ll help ensure every cake leaving our kitchen reflects the care and precision behind the Black Star Pastry name.

You’ll work closely with our Kitchen Leadership team, with the opportunity to bring your own experience, ideas and leadership style to a product that plays a defining role in our brand's success.

Here is how you will shine:

• Proven experience in a Senior Pastry Chef role – ideally in a CDP role for 2+ years


• Experience in a Production Kitchen environment highly regarded


• Demonstrated experience working on a high-demand, high-volume product in a fast paced environment


• Strong attention to detail with a focus on quality control that does not compromise operational efficiencies.


• Pride in performing the role of CDP for our Strawberry Watermelon Cake section – understanding the impact this team and cake has on the success of our Black Star Pastry brand.


• Build, maintain and contribute toward healthy teamwork and constructive working relationships.


• Clear communicate that is professional, authentic, and concise, with the ability to make informed decisions.


• Maintain a good level of understanding of the restaurant and hospitality industry and trends.


• Ability to be flexible and adapt to meet the changing demands of our agile business.
