Job summary

Kogan People Solutions in Wangaratta invites an experienced Chef to lead a busy kitchen in a modern café in the heart of town. You’ll mentor cooks, oversee menu development, and ensure high standards of food safety and presentation.

This permanent, full-time role offers a negotiable salary in the AU$80,000–$85,000 range plus super. You’ll work weekday and weekend shifts in a positive rural‑community setting, developing your team and delivering memorable dining experiences.

Qualifications

  • Diploma level cookery qualifications (or equivalent).
  • 3+ years of experience since qualification, in a similar cuisine.
  • Availability across weekdays and weekends.
  • Strong understanding of food safety and HACCP.
  • Ability to prioritise, set goals and achieve them.
  • Proven people management and leadership capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor and inspire the kitchen team to deliver top results.
  • Assist in hiring and training of cooks and staff.
  • Supervise preparation of all meals and maintain quality.
  • Manage stock, cost control, ordering and budgeting.
  • Develop, test and introduce new menu items with management.
  • Ensure compliance with OH&S and Food Safety standards.

Chef – Wangaratta Kogan People Solutions is recruiting on behalf of a busy, modern café located in the heart of Wangaratta. Known for its polished atmosphere and diverse all-day breakfast and lunch menu, this well-established venue offers a dynamic and welcoming environment. With continued growth and a commitment to delivering memorable dining experiences to locals and visitors alike, our client is seeking a skilled and experienced Chef to join the leadership team in their kitchen.

  • Tenure: Full-time and ongoing
  • Schedule: Includes weekday and weekend shifts
  • Salary: Negotiable in the range of $80,000 to $85,000 + superannuation per annum

Responsibilities of our Chef will include:

  • Lead, mentor and inspire the kitchen team to deliver the best results.
  • Assist in the hiring and training of cooks and kitchen staff.
  • Supervise (and participate in) the preparation of all meals.
  • Manage kitchen consumables, stock takes, ordering, cost control and budgeting.
  • In consultation with the Management team, develop, test, and introduce new menu items.
  • Ensure strict compliance with OH&S and Food Safety standards.
  • Work alongside the management team.

About you:

  • You are passionate about the hospitality industry, with a commitment to staying ahead of culinary techniques and food trends
  • You demonstrate an uncompromising attitude towards flavour, consistency and presentation of the highest quality, whilst aligning and motivating a cohesive and hardworking team environment.
  • Are empathetic to those around you and work well under pressure.
  • You have substantial experience working in a similar cuisine and professional environment.

To be successfully considered for the role, you:

  • Possess excellent relevant post-secondary cookery-related qualifications, to at least Diploma level or agreed substitute.
  • Have at least three or more years’ experience since earning your qualifications, ideally in similar cuisine.
  • Are available across the working week and weekends.
  • Offer proven ability to prioritise, set goals and have the determination to achieve them.
  • Possess a thorough understanding of food safety and HACCP.
  • Understand cost control, time management, prioritization, and cost-efficient procurement practices.
  • Are an excellent people manager able to get the best out of your team.
