Job summary

Peter Stevens Motorworld in Ballarat is seeking an experienced Dealership Accountant to run the day-to-day accounting across our dealership group. Reporting to the COO, you will lead a small Finance team, manage vehicle inventory, floorplan administration and ensure timely month-end reporting.

The role requires solid GL, month-end, and tax knowledge with hands-on involvement and the ability to work across finance and operations.

Qualifications

• Experience in automotive dealership accounting is preferred.
• Strong general ledger, reconciliations and month-end close experience.
• Experience supervising or supporting a small finance team.
• Sound understanding of Australian taxation requirements (GST/BAS/PAYG/FBT).
• Attention to detail with accuracy and deadlines.
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to meet reporting deadlines.
• Strong Excel and accounting system skills.
• Hands-on, practical approach and ability to work with finance and operations teams.
• Tertiary qualification in Accounting; CPA/CA advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Lead and support a small team of Finance Assistants, ensuring accurate and timely completion of daily finance activities.
• Oversee day-to-day transaction processing, reconciliations and financial controls.
• Maintain accuracy of vehicle inventory accounting and deal processing, including reconciliation of vehicle stock and associated transactions.
• Ensure accurate management of floorplan administration, including vehicle additions, payouts and reconciliations.
• Review and approve bank payments on a daily basis.
• Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and ensure balance sheet accounts are regularly reconciled.
• Follow established month-end processes to deliver accurate and timely monthly reporting across the Group.
• Prepare and submit financial reporting to manufacturers and other key stakeholders as required.
• Ensure ongoing compliance with Australian taxation requirements, including GST, BAS, PAYG, FBT and LCT, and complete relevant submissions within required timeframes.
• Investigate and resolve accounting discrepancies and outstanding reconciliation items.
• Maintain and support effective internal financial controls.
• Assist the Directors with reporting, audit requirements and other finance activities as required.
• Identify opportunities to continually improve the efficiency and accuracy of finance processes.

Peter Stevens Motorworld is a dynamic, family-owned and managed business in the heart of Ballarat.

We are seeking an experienced Dealership Accountant to join our Finance team and take responsibility for the day-to-day accounting function across our dealership group.

This is a hands-on role combining dealership accounting with the leadership of a small team of Finance Assistants. You will ensure transactional processing, vehicle inventory, floorplan administration, reconciliations and month-end reporting are completed accurately and on time.

The Role

Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer, your key responsibilities will include:

• Lead and support a small team of Finance Assistants, ensuring accurate and timely completion of daily finance activities.

• Oversee day-to-day transaction processing, reconciliations and financial controls.

• Maintain the accuracy of vehicle inventory accounting and deal processing, including reconciliation of vehicle stock and associated transactions.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have:

• Previous accounting experience, preferably within an automotive dealership, multi-site retail or similarly fast-paced environment.

• Strong general ledger, reconciliation and month-end accounting experience.

• Experience supervising or supporting a small finance or accounts team.

• A sound understanding of Australian taxation requirements.

• Strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.

• Excellent organisational skills and the ability to meet strict reporting deadlines.

• Strong Excel and accounting system skills.

• A practical, hands-on approach and willingness to investigate and resolve issues.

• The ability to work effectively with both finance and operational teams.

A tertiary qualification in Accounting, Commerce or a related discipline is preferred. CPA/CA qualification or progress towards qualification would be advantageous but is not essential where you have strong relevant experience.
