Job summary

Parkes Shire Council is seeking a motivated Cadet Engineer to join our team while completing a Civil Engineering degree. This role provides hands-on experience across Operations and Technical Services, supporting key infrastructure projects within our community.

You will assist with estimating, contract administration and project delivery, while developing practical engineering skills in a supportive environment and contributing to roads and civil assets improvements.

Qualifications

  • Completion of HSC and eligibility for entry into university to undertake engineering degree.
  • Strong interest in local government infrastructure and project delivery.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication for stakeholder interaction.
  • Ability to manage tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Proactive, team-oriented approach.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with engineering design, estimating and contract administration.

Job description

Parkes Shire Council is seeking a motivated Cadet Engineer to join our team while completing a Civil Engineering degree. This is a great opportunity to gain hands‑on experience across both Operations and Technical Services, supporting the delivery of key infrastructure projects within our community.

In this role, you will assist with estimating, contract administration and project delivery in line with Council’s works program, while developing practical engineering skills in a supportive environment.

In this role your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with engineering design, estimating and contract administration
  • Support the delivery of infrastructure projects across roads and civil assets
  • Contribute to ensuring designs meet relevant standards and timelines
  • Assess traffic impacts and help develop practical solutions, including parking and transport planning
  • Respond to customer applications under the Roads Act and Heavy Vehicle legislation
  • Assist in reviewing NHVR permits and gazettal requests
  • Undertake other duties as required.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Completion of the Higher School Certificate (HSC) and eligibility for entry iuniversity to undertake an engineering degree via nto a recognised distance education.
  • Strong interest in local government infrastructure and project delivery
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for effective interaction with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to manage tasks and meet deadlines
  • A proactive and team-oriented approach
  • Current and maintained NSW Drivers Licence
  • SafeWork NSW Construction Induction (White Card)

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

  • Currently undertaking tertiary studies in engineering, surveying or similar.
  • Experience in the use of GIS and/or AutoCAD software.
  • Knowledge of the role, functions and responsibilities of Local Government.

Benefits

The appointment will be in accordance with the Local Government (State) Award and Parkes Shire Council's policies and conditions of employment.

The position is classified within the Traineeship salary band (T4 - T8), commencing at $860.00 to $1,169.00 per week, with the starting salary determined based on relevant study, including units completed towards an engineering degree, skills and experience. Candidates with relevant university study may be eligible to commence at a higher point within the band. Superannuation and salary packaging options are also available to increase your take home pay.

Parkes Shire Council is offering cadetship, apprenticeship and traineeship opportunities for highly motivated and enthusiastic people looking to gain on-the-job experience and practical knowledge whilst working towards a nationally accredited qualification through a Registered Training Organisation.

The CAT Program provides you with the opportunity to gain on-the-job training, coaching and mentoring from experienced professionals, with all training and study costs paid for by Council.
