Brand Noise in North Sydney is seeking an experienced business and technology journalist to identify and produce original stories about industry players, executives and financial developments shaping Australia's consumer tech and retail sectors.

You will report on global brands like Apple, Samsung, LG, Google and Amazon, as well as Australian retailers, delivering sharp analysis and exclusive angles for SmartHouse Magazine and related outlets.

Job description

As a business journalist you will identify and produce original stories covering industry companies, executives and financial developments shaping Australia's consumer technology and retail sectors. You will report on major global businesses including Apple, Samsung, LG, Google and Amazon, as well as Australian retailers such as JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, Woolworths and Wesfarmers.

Key responsibilities

Develop business and technology news

Develop exclusive Australian angles on international stories

Monitor company results, acquisitions, executive movements and regulatory investigations

Track developments across the consumer electronics, appliance, audio and retail industries

Write analysis that explains the commercial significance of industry developments

Produce product news and reviews covering smartphones, televisions, audio equipment, robotics and emerging technologies

Manage and commission content for SmartHouse Magazine

Create compelling headlines and select images that attract readers

Build relationships with retailers, suppliers, executives and industry sources

Identify original stories, develop sources and uncover information that competitors have missed

About you

Successful news reporter with at least three years of experience covering business, technology, retail or a related field

Strong news judgement and an instinct for identifying stories

Passion for breaking news and securing exclusive angles

Excellent writing, research and interviewing skills

Understanding of business reporting and financial issues

Genuine interest in consumer technology and emerging products

Ability to explain complex subjects clearly and accurately

Experience working quickly in a daily digital publishing environment

Understanding of how headlines, images and presentation influence readership

Confidence to review and assess new technology products
