Job summary

Primary Industries invites applications for a Biosecurity Officer (Animal Biosecurity & Welfare Operations) in Queensland. You will contribute to operational activities delivering consistent biosecurity and welfare management, provide accurate advice and workable solutions to ABW management.

The role involves investigating alleged breaches under the Animal Care & Protection Act 2001 and the Biosecurity Act 2014, supporting BQ's effort to protect agriculture and markets, field work with livestock

Qualifications

• Mandatory Diploma or Advanced Diploma in a relevant field or equivalent.
• A current C class driver’s licence.
• Vaccination for Q Fever or willingness to be vaccinated.
• Field experience with animal welfare and disease investigations is highly regarded.

As a Biosecurity Officer (Animal Biosecurity & Welfare Operations), you will:
Contribute individually and as part of a team to deliver operational activities for animal biosecurity & welfare in a consistent, considered approach. Provide accurate advice & workable solutions to AB&W management on biosecurity risks.

Investigate alleged breaches of legislation relevant to the AB&W program within your work area & zone including Animal Care & Protection Act 2001 & the Biosecurity Act 2014.

Biosecurity Queensland (BQ) plays a leadership role in the biosecurity system in collaboration with its stakeholders. BQ leads the Queensland Government's efforts to protect our way of life, environment, biodiversity, human and animal health, industries and economy from plant and animal pest and disease threats.

Through supporting the collective efforts of our stakeholders and all Queenslanders, BQ will continue to protect our state and Australia from emerging plant and animal pests and diseases and effectively manage existing ones.

Animal Biosecurity and Welfare (ABW) supports BQ's efforts to prevent, prepare, respond to, and recover from diseases threatening livestock industries and maintaining access to markets. Our people work together to help mitigate biosecurity risks, uphold standards for animal welfare and animal management and lead the overall DPI response to biosecurity emergency incidents to achieve outcomes consistent with the Department's strategic direction for leadership in animal welfare, exhibited animal, animal management and animal ethics policy and service delivery.

As our biosecurity officer, you will provide operational services that protect and enhance animal biosecurity and welfare in Queensland. With Queensland being affected by more biosecurity incursions than any other Australian state or territory, your efforts will be integral in helping the government prevent, respond to, and recover from biosecurity concerns that threaten our environment and economy. This role is crucial to supporting Biosecurity Queensland investigate reports under the Biosecurity Act 2014, including cattle tick outbreaks and investigating reports underthe Animal Care and Protection Act 2001 for potential animal welfare offences including Cruelty and Duty of Care for livestock and domestic animals.

There are some qualifications that we see as essential. You must possess a:
It is a mandatory requirement for a technical officer to possess an Australian Diploma or Advanced Diploma in a relevant field or equivalent.
A current “C” class drivers' licence.
This role requires you to be vaccinated for Q Fever or willing to be vaccinated.

This role requires the ability to handle livestock and operate a 4WD. Previous field experience with animal welfare and disease investigations is highly regarded. If you do not have field experience, you will bring a good attitude and willingness to learn these aspects of the role.

You will have a keen eye for detail, great time management and effective problem-skilling skills. More than anything, you will have a positive attitude and make a great contribution to our team.
