We are Kestrel - one of the world’s largest producing underground coking coal mines, delivering around 7 million tonnes of high-quality metallurgical coal annually to global steelmakers.

But what truly sets us apart is our culture. It’s not uncommon to walk down the breezeway and strike up a conversation with our CEO or Executive Leaders. We believe that great ideas come from anyone, and we empower our team members to bring their insights forward - knowing they’ll be heard, valued and that the path from idea to implementation is refreshingly short.

We strive to create an environment where everyone feels respected and supported. Whether you’re an experienced professional or just starting your career, at Kestrel, you’ll find opportunities to grow, contribute, and have meaningful impact.

With a mine life to 2033 and reserves to 2046, we’re planning for a future that’s safe, sustainable, and full of opportunity - for our industry and our people. We’re proud of where we’ve come from, and even more excited about what’s ahead.

About the role:

The Coordinator Automation plays a critical role in leading and developing Kestrel’s automation and process control capability across surface and underground operations. Reporting to the Senior PCS Engineer and working closely with Production, Maintenance and Technical Services, this role is responsible for the reliable performance, optimisation and future development of automation, PCS and digital systems.

As a technical leader, you will provide subject matter expertise across control systems, lead automation improvement initiatives, and support the safe and effective integration of new technologies.

This role offers a rare opportunity to shape automation outcomes in a highly operational underground coal environment while contributing to Kestrel’s long-term innovation and workforce sustainability strategy.

Why you’ll love working here:
  • A permanent role on a site with a strong future – long mine life and room to grow.
  • Monday to Friday or a 9-day fortnight, the choice is yours.
  • Great pay and perks - Including competitive incentives, housing options, and salary packaging.
  • Health-first mindset - With our award-winning Health Program and subsidised private health insurance.
  • Supported to grow - We’ll back your development through tailored programs like our award-winning ‘Unleashed’ Leadership Program and study assistance.
  • A culture that walks the talk - Respect, agility, commitment and collaborating as one, aren’t just values - they’re how we operate, every day.
In this role, you will support Kestrel by:
  • Leading the maintenance, optimisation and continuous improvement of automation and process control systems across site.
  • Providing technical oversight and troubleshooting support for PLC, SCADA and associated automation infrastructure.
  • Coordinating the design, testing and implementation of automation and digital technology projects.
  • Ensuring control systems are reliable, safe, compliant and aligned with operational requirements.
  • Collaborating with Engineering, Production and Maintenance teams to integrate automation solutions into day-to-day operations.
  • Supporting data acquisition, analysis and reporting to improve system performance and decision-making.
  • Managing documentation, drawings, system configurations and change control processes.
  • Applying strong engineering governance, safety leadership and risk management practices.
  • Contributing to longer-term automation strategy, capability development and technology roadmaps.
About you:

You’re an experienced automation professional who enjoys combining hands‑on technical problem‑solving with leadership, mentoring and continuous improvement. You’re comfortable operating in a complex, operational environment and can translate technical solutions into practical outcomes that support production, safety and reliability.

You’re motivated by developing people, systems and capability - and you enjoy working collaboratively across disciplines to deliver results.

You will also have:

  • Trade or Tertiary qualification in Automation, Electrical, Mechatronics, Software, Computer Systems or a related Engineering discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience working with industrial automation and process control systems (PLC, SCADA, DCS).
  • Strong troubleshooting, diagnostic and systems integration capability.
  • Experience in mining, heavy industry or complex operational environments (underground experience highly regarded).
  • Ability to lead and coordinate technical work, projects and contractors.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with operational and technical stakeholders.
  • A proactive safety mindset and strong understanding of engineering and site compliance requirements.
  • Sound computer literacy and confidence working with data, digital tools and reporting systems.
  • Willingness to work across surface and underground operations and complete required site training.
A Place Where You Can Be You:
