Job summary

The Australian Turf Club is seeking an experienced Assistant Racecourse Manager at Rosehill Gardens. You will supervise course proper, training tracks, stable complex and grounds, ensuring peak presentation for premier racing and training facilities.

Reporting to the Rosehill Gardens Racecourse Manager, you will lead a large team, manage maintenance programs, safety compliance and major projects while delivering high standards for race days and events. This role offers career growth within ATC.

Qualifications

  • Turf management experience in equine racing environments is essential.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership abilities with staff development experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Sound time management and organisational skills.
  • General operational and mechanical maintenance knowledge.
  • Working knowledge of WHS legislation and safety compliance.
  • Literacy and numeracy skills are required.
  • Computer literacy and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Experience handling and spraying chemicals.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Negotiation and influencing skills to build relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a large team and drive staff performance improvements.
  • Conduct soil testing, fertilising programmes and chemical usage oversight.
  • Advise on track maintenance and safety practices for race days.
  • Supervise major development projects and track reconstructions.
  • Coordinate barrier set-ups, barrier trials and race-day operations.
  • Set daily/weekly/monthly track maintenance priorities with the Racecourse Manager.
  • Recommend improvements or innovations in track, grounds and stable operations.
  • Promote Safety across the organisation through leading by example.
  • Perform ad-hoc duties as required.

LIFE IN THE ROLE

Reporting to the Rosehill Gardens Racecourse Manager, the Assistant Racecourse Manager will supervise the ongoing maintenance of the course proper, training tracks, stable complex and grounds at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse. The successful applicant will be instrumental in ensuring the iconic racecourse is presented in the best possible condition and contribute to making Rosehill Gardens a premier racing and training facility.

Key Responsibilities Include
  • Leading a large team, managing and improving staff performance;
  • Conducting Penetrometer readings, soil sampling and water testing and implement fertilising programmes;
  • Calculating Chemical usage and provide usage and safety advice to grounds persons;
  • In conjunction with the Racecourse Manager, supervise major development projects and track reconstruction;
  • Coordinating and supervise activities for barrier set up on race days, jump-outs and barrier trials and assist in the running of barrier trials held at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse.
  • Setting daily, weekly and monthly priorities regarding track maintenance in conjunction with the Racecourse Manager;
  • Making recommendations to the Racecourse Manager on improvements or innovations on matters relating to track maintenance, grounds, training and stable operations at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse.
  • Leading by example by role modelling a commitment to Safety across the organisation
  • Any other ad-hoc duties as required
About You

To be successful in the role, the right fit will possess:

  • Turf management experience in the maintenance of equine racing and training surfaces;
  • Supervisory skills and the ability to coordinate, motivate and performance manage team members;
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Sound time management and organisational skills;
  • General operational and mechanical maintenance skills;
  • Working knowledge and understanding of the relevant WHS legislation;
  • Sound literacy and numeracy skills;
  • Computer literacy and skills in the use of Microsoft Office;
  • Sound knowledge and practical experience of handling and spraying chemicals;
  • A green keeping trade certificate or a related discipline along with a thorough knowledge and understanding of the racing industry
  • Strong analytical skills and the capacity to develop innovative solutions to problems;
  • Sound negotiation and influencing skills and the capacity to develop and maintain strong relationships;
