Seven West Media’s 7NEWS.com.au in Sydney is seeking an Assistant Editor to help drive the daily news agenda, shaping stories and delivering fast, accurate and engaging coverage for a national audience.

Based in Sydney, you’ll support editorial operations, commission and edit breaking news, collaborate with editors and reporters, and contribute to campaigns across sport and major events while maintaining high editorial standards.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in digital journalism and editing.
  • Strong commissioning, copy‑editing and headline writing skills.
  • Sound understanding of media law and editorial ethics.
  • Knowledge of SEO, social distribution and analytics.
  • Excellent organisation and communication skills, under deadlines.
  • Degree in journalism, communications or related field, or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

  • Support the day‑to‑day editorial operation, commissioning, editing and publishing breaking news.
  • Work with editors, reporters and producers to ensure accurate, engaging content.
  • Assist with content planning for major events, investigations, politics and business.
  • Collaborate with newsroom, social, video and audience teams to maximise reach.
  • Provide guidance to reporters to strengthen digital storytelling and performance.
  • Help deliver editorial campaigns, live coverage, newsletters and audience growth.
  • Use audience insights and performance data to inform decisions and improve reach.

Are you passionate about breaking news, digital storytelling and shaping the stories Australians are talking about? As Assistant Editor, you’ll play a key role in helping drive the daily news agenda for 7NEWS.com.au, working alongside a talented national team to deliver compelling journalism to millions of Australians every day.

A day in the life…

Based in Sydney , The Assistant Editor supports the daily editorial operation of 7NEWS.com.au, helping shape the news agenda, develop stories and deliver fast, accurate and engaging coverage for a national audience.

Working closely with the Director of Digital News, News Editor, Page Editors and wider editorial team, the role combines hands‑on editing with assistance across newsroom operations and forward planning. It also assists with editorial campaigns across sport, including AFL, and other major events throughout the year.

More specifically:

  • Support the day‑to‑day editorial operation of 7NEWS.com.au, helping commission, edit and publish breaking news, exclusives and developing stories.

  • Work closely with editors, reporters and producers to ensure content is accurate, engaging and aligned with editorial and legal standards.

  • Assist with content planning for major news events, investigations, politics, business and special coverage initiatives.

  • Collaborate with newsroom, social, video and audience teams to maximise content reach and engagement across platforms.

  • Provide guidance, feedback and support to reporters and producers to strengthen digital storytelling and newsroom performance.

  • Help deliver major editorial campaigns, live coverage, newsletters, video content and audience growth initiatives.

  • Use audience insights, SEO and performance data to inform content decisions and improve reach, engagement and loyalty.

  • Contribute to a positive, collaborative and inclusive newsroom culture while maintaining high editorial standards and sound judgement.

What will you need
  • Proven experience in digital journalism and editing, with the judgement and confidence to assist with coverage under pressure.

  • Excellent commissioning, copy‑editing and headline‑writing skills, with strong attention to accuracy, detail and storytelling.

  • Sound understanding of media law, editorial ethics, verification and responsible use of third‑party content.

  • Strong working knowledge of SEO, social distribution, audience analytics and content management systems; basic HTML knowledge is desirable.

  • Excellent organisation and communication skills, with the ability to balance immediate deadlines, forward planning and multiple editorial priorities.

  • A strong interest in news and current affairs, and a relevant qualification in journalism, communications or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
