Our team

The Geospatial Leadership team supports Geoscience Australia to be the national leader in government geospatial matters. This includes supporting the Chief of Division in the development of geospatial strategies, driving agendas at national and international fora, and coordinating across government and industry on geospatial matters.

The team works collaboratively to support geospatial initiatives, and the establishment of standards, and provide strategic leadership in the geospatial domain. The team provides some secretariat support to a variety of geospatial committees and also supports Geoscience Australia’s input into international forums, through the development of papers and collation of responses.

The role

The Assistant Director, Geospatial Leadership contributes to strategically shaping and amplifying Geoscience Australia's national influence in the geospatial domain by leading advocacy, empowering the executive with critical insights, and driving operational excellence.

In this role you will:

  • Strategically drive the organisation’s national geospatial leadership by contributing to the development and execution of overarching strategies in close partnership with the Director.
  • Support national advocacy efforts through the creation of compelling materials and the development of strategic initiatives designed to enhance the organisation's influence and promote its agenda.
  • Conduct in-depth research and analysis to identify emerging opportunities for Geoscience Australia and the Australian Government, navigate the evolving geospatial and geopolitical landscape, and provide crucial insights for informed decision-making.
  • Optimise the effectiveness of leadership activities by refining internal processes and documentation to ensure streamlined execution and enhanced efficiency.
  • Shape key narratives and influence stakeholders through the development of high-impact written and verbal communications that clearly articulate the organisation’s strategic messages to diverse audiences.
  • Lead and empower a high-performing team responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of the executive office, including meeting logistics, briefing preparation, and proactive stakeholder engagement.
  • Amplify Geoscience Australia's strategic voice by strategically managing external communication channels to ensure key messages are effectively disseminated and resonate with relevant national stakeholders.

To be successful in the role you will:

  • A solid understanding of the national and international geospatial industry, or the demonstrated ability to quickly acquire this knowledge.
  • Demonstrate a strong strategic orientation with a proven ability to contribute to the development and execution of national leadership strategies.
  • Possess exceptional advocacy and influencing skills, with a track record of developing compelling materials and driving impactful initiatives.
  • Exhibit superior analytical and research capabilities, with the capacity to synthesise complex information and provide insightful intelligence to executive leadership.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to operational excellence and the ability to identify and implement process improvements.
  • Possess outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to craft persuasive and impactful messages for diverse audiences.
  • Display strong leadership and team management abilities, with experience in leading and empowering teams to achieve operational excellence.
  • Demonstrate strategic acumen in managing external communications to enhance organisational visibility and influence.
  • Be a proactive, results-oriented leader with a passion for shaping and amplifying Geoscience Australia's national geospatial leadership.

Required skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualifications

  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of geospatial data management, including concepts of interoperability and accuracy.
