Job description

Solve by Talent is partnering with the University of Sydney to recruit an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Engineer to support the delivery of key Information and Communications Technology (ICT) initiatives that help shape the future of education, research, and innovation.

Salary of $131,108 to $147,858 + 17% Superannuation.

To be eligible for this role, you must have unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of the appointment (PR or Australian Citizenship).

Why join the University of Sydney?

Join one of Australia’s leading universities at a pivotal point of change, where technology is evolving to better support student learning, empower teaching excellence, and enable research delivery at global scale.

ICT is central to delivering the University’s academic mission. Working across faculties, disciplines, and research communities, you will shape the platforms, services, and partnerships that enable student success, strengthen teaching, and accelerate research impact.

With strong investment and clear direction, you’ll operate in a large and complex environment where your contribution has visible, meaningful impact across the University.

The opportunity

This role offers the opportunity to play a key part in operating and evolving the University’s enterprise AI environment, ensuring AI-enabled systems and generative AI tools are secure, reliable and responsibly managed.

You’ll work across the full engineering lifecycle of AI-enabled systems, from understanding business needs and shaping technical solutions through to development, deployment, monitoring, support and ongoing optimisation.

This is a hands‑on engineering role with a strong focus on operational reliability, model assurance and responsible AI, oppose to building AI models from scratch.

What you’ll do
  • Design, develop, deploy and operationalise scalable AI-enabled platforms, solutions and tools.
  • Administer, monitor and maintain AI-enabled platforms, services and generative AI tools in cloud environments.
  • Monitor and support the observability of AI platforms and services, responding to incidents, conducting root cause analysis and implementing preventative improvements.
  • Plan and deliver software upgrades, security patches, performance tuning and maintenance activities to keep AI services secure, reliable and efficient.
  • Validate and monitor AI model performance, identify technical and operational risks, and ensure outcomes remain accurate, explainable and aligned with assurance standards.
  • Support the infrastructure, data pipelines and data management practices underpinning AI systems.
  • Partner with architects, engineers, product teams, governance functions and business stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into practical technical solutions.
What we’re looking for
  • Extensive commercial experience across cloud, software, platform or integration engineering, including hands‑on experience delivering and supporting AI-enabled platforms within a large, complex organisation.
  • Strong coding capability in Python, SQL or similar languages, with experience in version control, testing and automation.
  • Hands‑on experience with AI platforms such as Microsoft Copilot, OpenAI, Azure AI Foundry, intelligent agents and other LLM-based services.
  • Strong data management and engineering capability, including troubleshooting AI systems and improving performance, reliability and scalability.
  • Demonstrated understanding of secure and responsible enterprise AI practices, including privacy, data protection, access controls, AI risk assessment, assurance, monitoring and governance in a complex organisational environment.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to translate business needs into practical technical solutions.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Computer Science, ICT or a related discipline, or equivalent training and experience.
