Job summary

Shellharbour City Council invites applicants to pursue an Apprentice Horticulture in the Parks & Gardens group at the Oak Flats depot. You will rotate through nursery operations, parks maintenance and landscape presentation, gaining hands-on experience while working toward a Certificate III in Horticulture at Yallah TAFE.

The program is open to school leavers and others, offering on-the-job training, course costs covered by the Council, and diverse benefits.

Qualifications

• Open to school leavers, mature age applicants or those currently enrolled in Certificate III in Horticulture.
• Must complete Pre-placement Medical examination.
• Must obtain White Card prior to commencement; onsite and safety requirements explained.

Responsibilities

• Support Open Spaces team across nursery operations, parks and reserve maintenance, and landscape presentation.
• Rotate through nursery, parks and gardens, turf and sportsfield maintenance, greenkeeping, tree maintenance and bush regeneration.
• Work towards a nationally recognised qualification while gaining practical experience.

Apprentice Horticulture (Parks & Gardens)

Do you have a passion for horticulture and want to grow your career in a thriving nursery environment?

As a Horticulture Apprentice, you will support the Open Spaces team while gaining practical skills across nursery operations, parks and reserve maintenance, and landscape presentation. Based at our Oak Flats Services Depot, you will have the opportunity to rotate through a range of areas including nursery, parks and gardens, turf and sportsfield maintenance, greenkeeping, tree maintenance and bush regeneration, developing valuable skills and experience while working towards a nationally recognised qualification.

You will complete a Certificate III in Horticulture Course at Yallah TAFE to gain and develop practical knowledge and skills associated with the presentation of our city. This opportunity is open to school leavers, mature age applicants, second year apprentices and/or those who have already commenced their Certificate III in Horticulture.

This is more than a trade... Our apprenticeships cover theoretical & practical requirements of on the job and off the job training. After completing your apprenticeship you will have formal qualifications with four years of practical experience with ability to gain additional tickets such as Medium Rigid (MR) truck licence, forklift ticket, loader competency and more.

Our continuing commitment to expand our Cadet, Apprentice and Traineeship (CAT) program will aim to grow Council's skilled workforce capacity by creating job opportunities and a talent pipeline for specialised roles. This is our third stage of this expansion of a number of new roles created, with a focus on the Open Spaces team.

Council's Cadet, Apprentice and Trainee (CAT) Program aims to grow Council's skilled workforce capacity by creating job opportunities and a talent pipeline for specialised roles and to develop future leaders by providing employment opportunity and professional development experiences that support and complement a related course of external tertiary study. Council’s cadets, apprentices or trainees receive ongoing training, guidance and support from workplace mentors while completing a nationally recognised qualification.

• Temporary Full time up to 4 years (or for the duration of the apprenticeship)
• 38 hours per week with access to a 9 Day-fortnight
• Salary range from $625.80 per week (for a 16 year old) up to $985.60 per week (for someone aged 21 and over)
