Job summary

MidCoast Council invites applications for an Apprentice Fitter Technician in Taree. You will join the Water Operations team and begin a Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade through TAFE, gaining hands-on experience and career progression.

You will learn to maintain and repair mechanical systems, work with skilled tradespeople, and build a solid foundation for a future in the water industry. The role is full-time, with a salary including superannuation.

Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in or eligible for Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade.
  • Must have or be working towards a P1 driver's licence.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain mechanical systems and equipment in water/WW facilities.
  • Inspect, service, repair and install mechanical equipment.
  • Work with experienced tradespeople during apprenticeship training.
  • Follow safety procedures and continuous improvement practices.
  • Assist in planned and unplanned maintenance tasks.

The Opportunity

Start your career in mechanical engineering with MidCoast Council through an apprenticeship in our Water Operations team. You’ll gain hands‑on experience while completing a Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade through TAFE.

Working alongside experienced tradespeople, you’ll develop practical skills in maintaining and repairing mechanical systems and equipment in a water operations environment. This is a great opportunity to earn while you learn and build a strong foundation for your future career.

What You’ll Learn:
  • Hands‑on experience maintaining mechanical systems and equipment across water and wastewater facilities.
  • Practical skills in inspecting, servicing, repairing and installing mechanical equipment.
  • An understanding of pumps, motors, valves and other equipment used in water operations.
  • How to safely complete planned and unplanned mechanical maintenance.
  • How to work effectively with experienced tradespeople while completing your apprenticeship training

Please note that to be a successful candidate for this role you’ll be required to complete a pre‑employment basic skills assessment and medical check (medical assessment will include a drug and alcohol test, sight and hearing, functional and medical component).

*Successful candidates will be required to obtain a General Construction Induction Card (White Card) prior to commencing on Monday, 1 February 2027.

What we offer?

Salary: The salary for this apprenticeship ranges from approximately $32,500 to $55,300 in accordance with the Local Government (State) Award. Your salary will be determined based on your age, qualifications, and any previous work experience. Superannuation (12%) is additional.

An allowance of $101.32 per week will also apply (Water Allowance).

Location: Upon commencement your normal place of work will be the MidCoast Water Services Depot located at Taree, Muldoon Street. Taree. You will also be required to be based from other Council sites across the MidCoast Council region.

Tenure: Full-time 38 hours per week over a 48-month period.
