Job description

Do you like pulling things apart to find out how they work?

Mariner Engineering is searching for an apprentice diesel / marine mechanic.
We are looking for someone who keeps asking "why" until they find the answer to the problem. You should be interested in marine but don't need boat experience - if you have worked on your own bike or car, we want to hear from you.

About us

We're a factory authorised dealer for leading marine brands with 30 years of experience in the industry. We primarily service diesel-powered recreational and commercial vessels at marinas across Melbourne, supported by our Spotswood workshop.

What you'll be doing
  • Working alongside qualified technicians on services, repairs, fault-finding and full engine re-powers.
  • Learning to test fuel, cooling, starting, charging and electrical systems properly, no guessing.
  • Getting hands-on with marine engines, gearboxes, shafts, propellers and steering, on and off the water.
  • Talking with customers and writing clear service reports.

You'll start by assisting on services. By the end of your apprenticeship you'll be running jobs on your own. Some days involve routine services, others can be solving a complex puzzle the whole team works together on.

You'll suit this if you
  • Want to begin an apprenticeship, a year 12 school-based pre-apprenticeship, or transfer from an automotive, diesel or marine apprenticeship
  • Like working with your hands and want to understand how things work
  • Turn up on time, follow through, and take pride in doing a job properly
  • Are comfortable working outdoors, on site and in the workshop
  • Communicate clearly, in person and in writing
  • Hold a drivers license or are working towards one
What we offer
  • A full apprenticeship with Cert III in Marine Mechanical Technology, with paid TAFE time
  • Paid tool allowance
  • Mentoring from experienced technicians
  • Volvo Penta, Yanmar and John Deere factory training
  • Paid attendance at industry events
  • A clear path to a full-time technician role once you finish

To be eligible for an apprenticeship or traineeship you must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or have full working rights.
