Job summary

Southern Adelaide Local Health Network is seeking an Allied Health Assistant to support patient care within Rehabilitation, Aged and Palliative Care teams across Noarlunga Hospital, Flinders Medical Centre and Repatriation Health Precinct.

You will assist with patient therapies under Allied Health Professionals, help run activity programs for older people with Dementia, and maintain documentation while adhering to WHS and infection control standards.

Qualifications

• Certificate 3 in Allied Health Assistance or equivalent.
• Ability to communicate with geriatric patients from diverse backgrounds.
• Experience in healthcare settings with older persons and/or dementia is advantageous.
• Ability to organize tasks and work within safety limits.
• Ability to work under supervision and in a physically demanding environment.
• Use of policies and procedures to ensure safe work practices.

Responsibilities

• Provide specific therapeutic interventions under direction of AHP staff.
• Monitor patient response to therapies and report to supervising AHP.
• Work within a multi-disciplinary team in a hospital ward environment.
• Supervise or assist in therapy and exercise programs as directed by the AHP.
• Adhere to WHS requirements including infection control and hand hygiene, confidentiality.
• Assist in maintenance of stock and ordering of supplies and equipment.
• Contribute to an integrated team culture responsive to consumer needs.
• Accurately maintain documentation under the direction of the supervising AHP.

About the role:

As an Allied Health Assistant within the Division of Rehabilitation, Aged and Palliative Care, you will play a vital role in supporting our allied health professionals to deliver exceptional patient care. Your primary focus will be assisting with patient treatments and interventions designed to enhance independence and improve functional outcomes for our patients. You will also be responsible for facilitating a high-quality diverse activity program for older people with Dementia where there are multiple complexities, cognitive behaviours and diverse cultural backgrounds.

Reporting to the GEM Allied Health Manager, this role is integral to assistance with patient care as directed in order to improve independence and occupational outcomes.

Duties for the role will include:

• Provide specific therapeutic interventions under direction of AHP staff - this will include Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Dietetics and other Allied Health discipline.
• Monitoring patient response to therapies and reporting to the supervising AHP.
• Working within a multi-disciplinary team in a hospital ward environment.
• Supervise or assist in therapy and exercise programs, as directed by the AHP.
• Adhere to relevant WHS requirements including infection control and hand hygiene, reporting of incidents and near misses, safe operation of workplace equipment and manual handling, and maintenance of patient/client confidentiality.
• Assist in the maintenance of stock and ordering of supplies and equipment.
• Contributing to the development of an integrated team approach and culture which is highly responsive to the needs of our consumers.
• Accurately maintain documentation under the explicit direction of the supervising AHP.

About you:

• Must possess or be undertaking a Certificate 3 in Allied Health Assistance or equivalent.
• Ability to communicate with geriatric patients with diverse cultural backgrounds andcomplex co-morbidities including dementia.
• Previous experience working in a healthcare setting particularly with older persons and/or persons with cognitive impairment / Dementia would be advantageous
• Ability to organise time to complete daily tasks, and work within their limits and to recognise when situations are unsafe for patients.
• Ability to work under close supervision and direction from Allied Health Professionals.
• Ability to work in a physically demanding environment to assist patient therapy and / or handling of patient related equipment and devices.
• Ability to use documented resources such as policies and procedures and work instructions to enable safe work practices
