Job summary

Southern Adelaide Local Health Network is seeking an Allied Health Assistant to support patient care in a rehabilitation and aged care context. You will assist with prescribed therapies, help with activities for older adults with dementia, and work under Allied Health Professionals in a hospital ward setting.

Role involves documentation, stock maintenance and participation in a collaborative multidisciplinary team to improve independence and functional outcomes for patients.

Qualifications

• Certificate 3 in Allied Health Assistance or equivalent is required.
• Ability to communicate with geriatric patients from diverse backgrounds and with complex needs.
• Experience in healthcare with older persons or dementia is advantageous.
• Ability to work under close supervision and in physically demanding environments.
• Must follow WHS, infection control and confidentiality requirements.

Responsibilities

• Provide therapeutic interventions under direction of Allied Health staff (Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Dietetics).
• Monitor patient responses and report to the supervising AHP.
• Work within a multi-disciplinary hospital ward team.
• Assist in therapy and exercise programs and supervise as directed by AHP.
• Maintain accurate documentation under supervision and support stock control.
• Contribute to an integrated team culture responsive to consumer needs.

About the role:

As an Allied Health Assistant within the Division of Rehabilitation, Aged and Palliative Care, you will play a vital role in supporting our allied health professionals to deliver exceptional patient care. Your primary focus will be assisting with patient treatments and interventions designed to enhance independence and improve functional outcomes for our patients. You will also be responsible for facilitating a high-quality diverse activity program for older people with Dementia where there are multiple complexities, cognitive behaviours and diverse cultural backgrounds.

Reporting to the GEM Allied Health Manager, this role is integral to assistance with patient care as directed in order to improve independence and occupational outcomes.

Duties for the role will include:

• Provide specific therapeutic interventions under direction of AHP staff - this will include Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Dietetics and other Allied Health discipline.
• Monitoring patient response to therapies and reporting to the supervising AHP.
• Working within a multi-disciplinary team in a hospital ward environment.
• Supervise or assist in therapy and exercise programs, as directed by the AHP.
• Adhere to relevant WHS requirements including infection control and hand hygiene, reporting of incidents and near misses, safe operation of workplace equipment and manual handling, and maintenance of patient/client confidentiality.
• Assist in the maintenance of stock and ordering of supplies and equipment.
• Contributing to the development of an integrated team approach and culture which is highly responsive to the needs of our consumers.
• Accurately maintain documentation under the explicit direction of the supervising AHP.

About you:

• Must possess or be undertaking a Certificate 3 in Allied Health Assistance or equivalent.
• Ability to communicate with geriatric patients with diverse cultural backgrounds andcomplex co-morbidities including dementia.
• Previous experience working in a healthcare setting particularly with older persons and/or persons with cognitive impairment / Dementia would be advantageous
• Ability to organise time to complete daily tasks, and work within their limits and to recognise when situations are unsafe for patients.
• Ability to work under close supervision and direction from Allied Health Professionals.
• Ability to work in a physically demanding environment to assist patient therapy and / or handling of patient related equipment and devices.
• Ability to use documented resources such as policies and procedures and work instructions to enable safe work practices
