Job summary

Excolo. is seeking an AI Engineer in Sydney to design and ship production AI agents that automate multi-step legal workflows.

You will build architectures for RAG pipelines, orchestration, and state management, and work with legal documents across extraction, classification, and summarisation. You will own end-to-end delivery, from problem definition through deployment and monitoring, balancing cost, latency and quality across providers while collaborating with legal experts to translate

Qualifications

• Hands-on experience delivering production AI systems, not prototypes.
• Experience designing and running agentic solutions that perform real work.
• Strong knowledge of LLM patterns including RAG, prompts, evaluation, and model APIs.
• Proficiency writing production Python code and deploying with CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience with cloud AI services and scalable deployment practices.
• Familiarity with legal documents and workflows.

We're partnering with a legal tech business looking to bring on an AI Engineer to build AI into their product. A hands-on role shipping agentic systems that take real legal work off a lawyer's desk, where accuracy and trust matter more than novelty.

The Opportunity

• Design and build production AI agents that execute multi-step legal processes end to end
• Build the surrounding architecture, including RAG pipelines, tool use, orchestration and state management
• Work with legal documents at depth, covering extraction, classification, summarisation and structured output
• Design evaluation frameworks that prove output quality before anything reaches a lawyer
• Own solutions end to end, from problem definition through design, build, deployment and monitoring
• Manage cost, latency and quality trade-offs across model providers
• Work directly with legal subject matter experts to turn how lawyers actually work into something the product can do

What We're Looking For

• Hands-on experience building and shipping production AI, not prototypes
• Agentic experience, having designed and run agents that do real work rather than demo well
• Strong across LLM patterns including RAG, prompt engineering, evaluation and model APIs
• Confident writing production Python
• Experience with cloud AI services and deploying with proper CI/CD
• Experience working in or building for the legal industry, with a working understanding of legal documents and workflows
• Able to work alongside non-technical experts and translate their process into product
