Job summary

Newcastle University is seeking a Research Associate or Senior Research Associate to manage a cutting-edge AI- and bioinformatics-augmented platform for PET degradation. You will integrate synthetic biology, enzyme engineering and data science to advance PETase, MHETase/BHETase, and PET-binding modules, coordinating with EBIC/ICOS teams and international collaborators.

Qualifications

PhD completed by appointment time; relevant biology/biotechnology field.
Substantial hands-on experience in synthetic biology and enzyme engineering.
Experience with DBTL workflows and high‑throughput screening.
Ability to develop robust, reproducible experimental workflows with good records.

Responsibilities

Steer end-to-end PETase discovery workflow from sequence to enzyme performance.
Apply bioinformatic filtering, motif analysis and structure prediction.
Design and construct expression libraries and establish QC protocols.
Plan directed-evolution and AI-guided engineering cycles for thermostability and activity.
Develop and validate tiered screening stacks and real-world material assays.
Utilize robotics and automation with design-of-experiments and batch controls.
Document results and share data with EBIC/ICOS partners.
