The role

As an Advisor in the Regulatory Affairs team, you will support and guide APRA to navigate a complex and evolving external environment. Provide strategic advice on developments across government, Parliament, the financial sector and the regulatory landscape, identify emerging risks and opportunities, and support and coordinate responses to complex external matters.

Working closely with stakeholders across APRA and externally, you will help shape APRA’s engagement with key domestic and international partners and contribute to APRA’s strategic objectives.

The team

The Regulatory Affairs branch sits within the Chief of Staff and Enterprise Services (ChES) division alongside APRA’s Corporate Affairs, Strategy and Governance, Finance, People and Culture, and Risk and Audit functions.

The branch leads APRA’s engagement with government, Parliament, domestic and international regulatory counterparts and other key stakeholders. We provide strategic advice and practical support on issues affecting APRA’s operating environment and strategic priorities.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic advice on developments across government, Parliament, the financial sector and the broader regulatory environment identifying implications and risks opportunities;
• Deliver high-quality written and verbal advice that is clear, concise, strategically focused and tailored to senior decision-makers;
• Lead and support APRA’s engagement with domestic and international regulatory counterparts, government agencies and all key stakeholders;
• Lead or contribute to significant government and parliamentary processes, including the preparation of advice, briefing materials and engagement strategies;
• Work across APRA to develop organisational positions on complex issues, drawing together diverse expertise and perspectives;
• Contribute to legislative, policy and regulatory matters affecting APRA’s mandate, operating environment and strategic priorities; and
• Identify emerging trends and issues affecting APRA’s external environment and recommend appropriate responses.

About you

We are seeking an experienced and intellectually curious adviser who enjoys operating in complex environments and can quickly understand issues from multiple perspectives.

• Strategic thinking and judgement, including the ability to identify emerging risks, opportunities and stakeholder considerations, and translate them into practical, well-reasoned advice;
• Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with the ability to build credibility, navigate complex stakeholder environments and achieve outcomes without relying on formal authority;
• Exceptional communication and executive advisory skills, including the ability to synthesise complex information, exercise sound judgement and deliver clear, concise and persuasive advice to senior decision-makers;
• Intellectual curiosity and analytical capability, with the ability to quickly understand unfamiliar issues, draw insights from diverse information sources and connect individual issues to broader organisational objectives;
• Relevant experience in regulatory affairs, government, public policy, parliamentary affairs, financial services, financial regulation or a similarly complex stakeholder environment;
• Knowledge of Australia’s financial system, government and parliamentary processes, or regulatory environment will be highly regarded; and
• Tertiary qualifications in public policy, economics, law, political science, international relations or a related discipline will be well regarded.
