The primary purpose of the Advanced Trainee in Medical Oncology is to provide effective clinical management of patients, under appropriate supervision by Attending Medical Officers (AMOs), including patient assessment, making treatment decisions, performing procedures, and maintaining adequate medical records; and to develop expertise in medical practice, in a complex clinical environment. This includes supervised general medical management of patients admitted to specialist departments.
The Medical Oncology Advanced Trainee will be in an accredited Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) training program within the Medical Oncology Department in a network of hospitals, or an individual hospital. The Advanced Trainee will be assigned to the Medical Oncology Department for the specified term and will undertake specific tasks and responsibilities at that Hospital. The Advanced Trainee will work as part of a multidisciplinary team and supervise junior medical officers (JMOs) and medical students. It is also expected that the Advanced Trainee participates in the clinical meetings and teaching and be subject to training and performance reviews.
Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the trainee’s skills, knowledge and experience. The medical officer will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Attending Medical Officer (AMO). All patients managed within the hospitals of the health service are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding their care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.
These positions are based in NNSWLHD at The Tweed Hospital or Lismore Base Hospital, as the advertised position indicates.
There are eleven networks of hospitals, or individual hospitals, as follows. Liverpool, Macarthur, St Vincent's, Bankstown, Royal North Shore Network, Prince of Wales, St George & Sutherland, St George Private, Wollongong, Royal Prince Alfred (Lifehouse), Concord, Westmead, Nepean, Blacktown, Orange (2 days a week in one of the three month rotations), Calvary Mater Newcastle, Tamworth, Coffs Harbour, Gosford, The Tweed Hospital, Lismore Base Hospital, Port Macquarie, Orange Base Hospital.
