Job description

Court Services Victoria provides corporate services and facilities to support the performance of the judicial, quasi-judicial and administrative functions of Victoria's courts and tribunal, Judicial College and Judicial Commission.

Collectively, Victoria's Supreme, County, Magistrates', Children's, and Coroners courts, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), the Judicial College of Victoria, the Judicial Commission of Victoria, and Court Services Victoria (CSV) are referred to as the ‘Courts Group'.

Our people enable the Courts Group to deliver on each jurisdiction's own strategic priorities while also pursuing strategic opportunities that are interconnected and deliver benefits more broadly.

The Magistrates' Court of Victoria (MCV) has a long history of providing justice for the people of Victoria in metropolitan and regional courts across the state. The MCV determines in excess of 200,000 cases per annum at 51 venues, dealing with over 90 percent of all adult cases that come before Victorian courts each year.

MCV aims to be an innovative, accessible and responsive court that provides quality services to the Victorian community.

About the Role

Make a crucial contribution to a multidisciplinary team that includes a magistrate, lawyer, police and support persons. ARC provides non-adversarial, less formal hearings to review and support participant progress. You will be providing complex case management support using a holistic and collaborative approach.

This role provides short-term (up to 4 months) case management support to people on bail with a range of complex needs who are participating in the CISP. The role also provides longer-term (up to 12 months) case management support to people with complex mental illness and/or cognitive impairment needs who are participating in ARC.

Eligible participants have a range of needs including mental illness and/or cognitive impairment, alcohol and substance issues, homelessness, family violence and/or limited social supports to recover or stabilise their condition. You will work with voluntary, non-mandated clients for up to 12 months prior to sentencing. There is time to build rapport, carefully sequence goals, navigate setbacks and steadily address complicated issues.

Along with the participant, you will attend Court on a monthly basis to provide expert advice to the Magistrate and other key stakeholders and members of the multidisciplinary team.

About You

This role demands extensive case management expertise and the ability to provide client-centred, strengths-based and solution-focused support.

You will bring:

  • Tertiary qualifications (Diploma level highly desirable) and/or relevant case management experience in areas such as forensic, family violence, AOD, homelessness and/or mental health.
  • Experience communicating hope and optimism for change and applying a person-centred, evidence-based approach to enhance client motivation.
  • Experience in, or demonstrated capacity to provide, coaching and mentoring to case managers, particularly in an area of advanced knowledge and experience.
  • The ability to establish effective working relationships with the judiciary, legal professionals and service/court staff.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the preparation of formal reports and case notes and the ability to speak to your work in a court setting.
