Job summary

Mackay Regional Council is seeking an Accountant – Financial Systems (FS0056) for a temporary full-time parental leave cover until June 2027. The role focuses on financial systems support, reporting and controls to sustain council’s financial operations.

You will analyse data, troubleshoot end-user issues, and contribute to improvements in system functionality and reporting. Strong Excel skills and knowledge of accounting systems are essential.

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualification in Business, Finance, Commerce or Accounting (or equivalent)
• 3+ years in a similar role with accounting systems experience
• Strong Excel skills and comfort with corporate systems
• Excellent written and verbal communication with stakeholders across a large organisation
• Analytical approach, attention to detail and ability to prioritise work

Responsibilities

• Support Council’s financial systems and related accounting activities, including system maintenance, upgrades and enhancements.
• Contribute to projects that improve system functionality, information quality and business processes.
• Investigate and troubleshoot end-user issues, providing clear, timely resolutions and guidance.
• Analyse financial data to identify trends, risks and opportunities, and develop reports and dashboards for planning, budgeting, forecasting and statutory reporting.
• Contribute input into internal controls, financial policies and procedures to support compliance and governance.
• Assist with annual financial statements and respond to audit queries as required.

Join Mackay Regional Council as our Accountant – Financial Systems in a temporary full-time role providing parental leave cover until June 2027. You will provide financial systems advice and support, help colleagues resolve system issues, and improve the reporting, processes and controls that support Council’s financial operations.

• Analyse financial data to identify trends, risks and opportunities, implement practical solutions , and develop reports and dashboards for planning, budgeting, forecasting and statutory reporting .
• Contribute advice and input into internal controls, financial policies and procedures to support compliance and good governance.
• Support financial reporting requirements, including assisting with annual financial statements and responding to audit queries as required.

About you

You bring a strong analytical mindset, clear communication skills and the ability to adapt in a changing, customer-focused environment. You’re comfortable translating technical and accounting concepts into practical guidance for a range of stakeholders.

Essential

• Tertiary qualifications in Business, Finance, Commerce or Accounting (or equivalent) or currently studying towards.
• Demonstrated practical experience (minimum 3 years) in a similar role, including strong knowledge of accounting systems, computer concepts and programs.
• Well-developed skills in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and confidence working with corporate systems.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships across a large organisation.
• Strong analytical approach to problem solving, initiative and attention to detail.
• Proven ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines and deliver quality outcomes.

Desirable

• Experience with the TechnologyOne suite (including CI Anywhere) or similar integrated finance systems.
• Experience in project management, budgeting and project costing.
• Eligibility for membership of CPA Australia or Chartered Accountants ANZ.
• Understanding of local government accounting, relevant legislation and audit requirements.
