Who We Are

Our Aboriginal Health unit provides culturally safe and accessible programs and services in the Riverina region. In addition to providing a service to inpatients and clients individually, we offer several programs and services that Aboriginal Health staff within the Murrumbidgee LHD are trained in and responsible for implementing.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • The Aboriginal Health Worker role is non-clinical and provides a variety of services in a community and/or hospital setting. These services include advocacy, support, and liaison and health promotion.
  • Aboriginal Health Workers also communicate with, and facilitate access to, other government and non-government organisations and support services in order to provide care that meets the social, emotional and cultural needs of the patient/client. This communication may occur during and/or after the person’s contact with the health service.
  • The Aboriginal Health Practitioner provides flexible, holistic and culturally sensitive health services to Aboriginal Clients, inpatients and the community, to achieve better health outcomes and better access to health services for Aboriginal people.
  • The Aboriginal Health Practitioner will provide a range of direct clinical services as defined by the Scope of Practice for the community in which they work.
  • Work with Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal health staff to develop and implement programs and strategies for improving health outcomes for the Aboriginal individuals and communities.
  • You’ll work within a collaborative team that enables a culture of support.

Your contribution as a healthcare professional will have a meaningful and positive impact, which is felt at a community level.

  • Given the nature of the client group supported by this service, applications from male candidates are particularly encouraged to assist in providing diversity of care and meeting the varied needs of consumers. This position is specifically designated for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander male applicants, recognising the importance of providing culturally safe, gender-responsive care that meets the specific needs of Aboriginal male consumers.

Having an Aboriginal male in this position will strengthen cultural safety, build trust and improve engagement, particularly where cultural practices, gender-specific responsibilities and Men's Business require support from a male Aboriginal Health Worker/Practitioner.
