Job summary

Life Without Barriers is seeking an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Support Specialist to lead cultural support plans for children and young people in OOHC on Whadjuk Noongar Country in Perth. The role focuses on ensuring voices are heard, advocacy, and facilitating strong connections to family, culture and community.

Permanent, Part Time (0.8 FTE) in the Perth region, with probity checks required.

Qualifications

• Certificate IV or higher in Community Services or related discipline is required.
• Be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent.
• Provide cultural referee details who can comment on knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues.
• Demonstrated experience working with individuals, families and communities, ideally with children and young people in OOHC.
• Knowledge of issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.
• Ability to work collaboratively with peers, employees and external agencies.

Responsibilities

• Lead the development and delivery of cultural support plans for children and young people in out-of-home care.
• Promote transition of Aboriginal children in OOHC to Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations.
• Participate on carer and intake panels as an Aboriginal Independent Panel Member for cultural advice.
• Attend home visits to provide cultural support to children, young people and carers.
• Provide crisis support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and youth in placement breakdown.
• Support engagement with local Aboriginal communities and community groups.

Role: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Support Specialist

Employment Type: Permanent, Part Time (0.8 FTE)

Location: Whadjuk Noongar Country(Perth)

In this role you will ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people remain connected to family, community and culture, provide strong advocacy to ensure their voices are heard and develop a strong sense of connection and belonging. You will also play a key role in developing, monitoring and implementing Aboriginal cultural support plans for children and young people living within an Out of Home Care setting.

You will be instrumental in achieving our Strategy and Elevate RAP objectives and upholding our commitment to the transition of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children in OOHC to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Community-Controlled Organisations.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the development and delivery of cultural support plans for children and young people in out-of-home care
• Promote and drive LWB’s transition of Aboriginal children in LWB’s out of home care program to Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations.
• Participate on carer and intake panels as an Aboriginal Independent Panel Member to provide cultural advice and recommendations.
• Attend home visits to provide cultural support to children, young people and carers
• Provide crisis support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young people in the case of placement breakdown
• Support and promote engagement with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities and community groups.

Key Requirements

• Certificate IV or higher in Community Services or a related discipline
• Be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander decent
• You will be required to provide contact details for a cultural referee who can comment on your knowledge of issues impacting on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities in contemporary society and your ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The cultural referee must identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person.
• Demonstrated experience working with individuals, families and communities, ideally with children and young people in an out of home care environment.
• Knowledge of issues impacting on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities
• Ability to work collaboratively with a range of stakeholders including peers, employees and external agencies

Successful candidates will be required to clear probity checks including National Criminal History Record Check, WA Working with Children Check and WA Child Protection Check DCP395.
