Postdoctoral Research Associate in Mathematics and Statistics

The University of Sydney is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Mathematics and Statistics. This is a full-time, 3-year fixed-term position located on the Camperdown Campus at the School of Mathematics and Statistics.

The successful applicant will undertake research embedded in one of the research groups in the School of Mathematics and Statistics and will be affiliated with the Sydney Mathematical Research Institute (SMRI) under the supervision of Professor Stephan Tillmann. Preference will be given to candidates working in the areas of applied mathematics, or theoretical or applied statistics, and who will be able to build capacity in these areas at SMRI through the organization of seminars, conferences, or outreach activities.

The key responsibilities of this role include:

  • demonstrating research excellence in mathematics or statistics
  • developing research collaborations
  • assisting with grant writing and publishing original work
  • developing your profile and the profile of SMRI in the areas of applied mathematics or statistics through conferences and seminars
  • enhancing relationships with outputs such as research and development, commercialisation, improved practices, and policy development

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • a PhD (or near completion) in mathematics or statistics
  • primary research interests in applied mathematics, or theoretical or applied statistics
  • proven research excellence in these areas
  • demonstrated evidence of independent research ability and potential in an area of applied mathematics, or theoretical or applied statistics
  • experience in research record keeping, preparation of research papers and presentation of seminars
  • experience in organisation of seminars, conferences or outreach activities
  • demonstrated excellence in written and oral communications skills, interacting with a variety of researchers and stakeholders
