About the Department

The Department of History of Art at the University of Vienna is the largest centre for research and education in the visual arts in Austria. It focuses on the visual arts in Europe, Asia, and the Islamic World. Currently there are 2,000 students.

Your new job

As a university assistant (pre-doc), you will complement the team around Univ.-Prof. Lukas Nickel. Our research and teaching focusses on the art history of East Asia.

The employment duration is 3 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 3 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a declaration of non-extension. With appropriate work progress, an extension to a total maximum of 4 years is possible.

Your tasks
  • You participate in all activities at the chair of Art History of Asia (research projects, conferences, excursions etc.)
  • You pursue your PhD project
  • You hold university courses and supervise students according to the requirements specified in the collective agreement for PhD students
  • You contribute to administrative tasks
Your profile
  • Excellent Master degree with a thesis, preferably in the field of Art History of Japan
  • PhD project of outstanding quality
  • Languages: Excellent English and German knowledge, and at least one East Asian language
  • Competence in teaching
  • Team skills and organisational expertise
