Zusammenfassung

Die Veterinärmedizinische Universität Wien sucht einen hochmotivierten PhD-Kandidaten zur Mitarbeit in einem interdisziplinären One-Health-Forschungsprojekt. Es wird ein künftiges, gemeinsames Frühwarndesystem entwickelt, das gefangene Insekten und deren Erreger in Österreich überwacht.

Qualifikationen

• Abgeschlossenes Studium in Veterinärmedizin, Biomedizin oder Biologie (Diplom oder Bachelor+Master).
• Gute Deutschkenntnisse (min. B2) und gute Englischkenntnisse (min. B2).
• Führerschein Klasse B und Bereitschaft zu Fahrten zu Bauernhöfen in Österreich.

Aufgaben

• PhD-Kandidat arbeitet in einem interdisziplinären One-Health-Projekt.
• Durchführung molekularbiologischer Analysen und Auswertung der Ergebnisse.

Offer Description

Job Summary/offer: We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join an interdisciplinary One Health research project investigating emerging vector borne diseases. An innovative, citizen science–based surveillance system will be developed to monitor biting insects (Diptera) and their pathogens in Austria, addressing the growing risk of vector-borne diseases under climate and land-use change. By combining farmer-collected samples with standard trapping methods and molecular analyses (PCR and sequencing), the project compares sampling approaches and links vector diversity and infection patterns to environmental factors. The resulting altitude-stratified atlas and participatory early-warning framework aim to strengthen innovative One Health collaboration and improve preparedness for emerging diseases such as West Nile, Bluetongue, and Lumpy Skin Disease. The PhD candidate will work in an international collaborative research environment at the interface of veterinary public health, vector ecology and One Health.

Completed studies in the field of veterinary medicine, biomedicine, biology (or comparable field), (diploma or bachelor+master's degree); Good written and spoken German skills (B2), Good communication skills also with farmers and other Citizen Science participants in German; Good English language skills (B2); Class B driving licence; Flexibility to drive to different farms throughout Austria (with a focus on Tyrol); Laboratory experience as part of completed internships or professional experience; Ability to carry out independent scientific work and structured documentation; Willingness to engage in interdisciplinary and intersectional cooperation in the One Health context, also across universities at different locations; Interest in One Health, vectors, citizen science, as well as molecular biological analyses and evaluations formelle Musskriterien, um die Aufgaben erfüllen zu können, zB completed Rotating Internship, Dr./PhD in the area of XY, language skills, etc.
