Smartness, a hospitality tech SaaS leader, seeks a Senior Data Engineer in Austria. You’ll design and maintain scalable data pipelines, from ingestion to analytics, enabling reliable insights for multiple teams.

You’ll work with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), modern data stacks, and distributed processing (Spark, Beam, Polars). Fluent English is required; Italian is a plus. Remote-friendly with equity and competitive pay.

What Will You Do?

As a Senior Data Engineer, you’ll be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining scalable data infrastructures that turn raw data into reliable, actionable insights. You’ll work like an internal enabler for multiple teams, owning data pipelines end-to-end and ensuring data quality, performance, and availability across the organization.

Your Missions

• Design, build, and maintain robust data pipelines (ETL/ELT) to ingest, transform, and serve data from multiple sources.
• Develop and optimize data models and warehouses to support analytics, reporting, and data-driven decision making.
• Ensure data quality, reliability, and performance, monitoring pipelines and resolving issues proactively.
• Collaborate closely with Product, Tech, Analytics, and Business teams to understand data needs and translate them into scalable solutions.
• Enable analytics and experimentation by providing clean, well-documented, and accessible datasets.
• Drive continuous improvement of the data stack, tooling, and best practices, balancing speed, scalability, and cost.

What We're Looking For

• Data Engineering Expertise – Strong experience designing, building, and maintaining scalable and reliable data pipelines and data platforms. Solid knowledge of data modelling, SQL, ETL/ELT patterns, and data quality practices.
• Modern Data Stack – Hands-on experience with cloud-based data platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and modern data warehouses/lakes. Experience with tools and technologies for data transformation, orchestration, and pipeline development (e.g. Airflow/Dagster, Spark or similar).
• Analytical Mindset – Ability to understand business problems and translate them into effective data structures and solutions.
• Autonomy & Ownership – Comfortable working with high ownership, independently managing priorities, proactively identifying problems, and delivering reliable, high-quality solutions.
• Strong understanding of distributed computing concepts and hands-on experience with distributed data processing frameworks such as Apache Spark, Apache Beam, Polars, or equivalent technologies. Ability to reason about partitioning, data skew, shuffles, parallelism, memory usage, and query/pipeline performance.
• Track Record – 3+ years of experience as a Data Engineer or in similar data-focused roles, ideally in startups or scale-ups.
• Bonus – Experience in SaaS, travel-tech, or hospitality-related data environments.
• Languages – Fluent English. Professional Italian is a plus.

Candidates with solid professional experience but limited exposure to this specific role typically join with an annual OTE starting from €45,000 across Europe, while candidates with significant relevant experience may receive compensation of up to €67,000, depending on their expertise, scope of responsibilities, and expected impact - also, you have the opportunity to receive equity, aligning your success with the long-term growth of the company.
