The professorship will cover Pharmaceutical Chemistry, a core research area of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and will take full responsibility for this subject in research and in teaching for students of pharmaceutical sciences and related natural/life science studies. Research will be in the field of medicinal chemistry/drug development focusing on the synthesis and design of small molecules targeting biomolecules, the investigation of structure‑activity relationships and structure‑property relationships, the determination of physicochemical and pharmacokinetic parameters and, subsequently, the optimisation of lead structures for application as research tools or drugs.
The research activities of the professorship will focus on medicinal chemistry approaches to synthesise and develop small molecules targeting biomolecules as research tools or for medical application. Technologies of synthetic organic chemistry and methods of pharmaceutical analysis (NMR, mass spec) are applied together with rational drug design. It is expected that the successful candidate will connect closely to the other fields such as proteomics, interactomics and metabolomics, network pharmacology, pharmaceutical biochemistry and cell biology or microbial targeting and thus strengthen the research in the department and enhance activities related to the acquisition of third‑party funds. The research topic will thus require interdisciplinary working strategies in particular with strong links to drug target research, computational chemistry and computational structural biology. The successful candidate is expected to have an excellent scientific track record, including a clear record of independent research and substantial acquisitions of third‑party funds.
Pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry plays a central role in teaching within the bachelor’s degree programme in Pharmaceutical Sciences as well as in the master’s and PhD programmes. In a combination of lectures and practical exercises, students are taught in depth about organic drugs, including their synthesis, structural analysis, structure‑activity relationships and principles of the application of drugs (ADMET) by the successful candidate. The candidate is expected to possess profound of medicinal substances and excipients used in medicinal products as well as significant skills in teaching basic and advanced pharmaceutical chemistry.
