The Biomedical Sequencing Facility is an academic core facility and technology platform for Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), including single-cell methods and many other assays. It is based at the CeMM Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, on the campus of the Medical University of Vienna.

We are seeking a motivated and capable laboratory technician whom we will train to perform a wide range of NGS assays (genome, transcriptome, epigenome, single-cell etc.) in cancer, immunity, genetic diseases & beyond.

Fulltime, 40 hours per week
Your tasks
  • Contribute to the swift and flawless delivery of high-quality services for all customers of the Biomedical Sequencing Facility
  • Conduct a broad range of sequencing assays with high experimental rigor and accurate documentation
  • Interact with and assist academic researchers using NGS in their projects (receive samples, provide advice, address problems etc.)
  • Troubleshoot technical problems in sample preparation and sequencing workflows
  • Contribute to day‑to‑day operations of the lab, including scheduling, purchasing, quality control, billing, recruitment, and accreditation
  • Provide customer support, teach methods and best practices to collaborating scientists, help organize technology workshops
  • Contribute to special projects such as national‑scale NGS‑based pathogen monitoring and the Genome of Europe initiative
  • Follow and anticipate important developments in the field, identify and establish new technologies, work with pilot users
The Biomedical Sequencing Facility

The successful candidate will be part of the Biomedical Sequencing Facility (BSF) based at CeMM. The BSF is Austria's first and leading center of expertise for next‑generation sequencing in biomedicine. Under the scientific leadership of Christoph Bock and with a dedicated team of staff scientists, the BSF contributes to biomedical research and precision medicine in Vienna, Austria, and beyond. The BSF is equipped with latest technology for high‑throughput genomics and powerful scientific computing infrastructure. The BSF's mandate includes a strong focus on technology development, contribution to study design and bioinformatic data analysis, as well as training and teaching best practices in sequencing technology and genomic medicine. Furthermore, it supports biomedical scientists and clinicians in the development of custom NGS protocols and in the bioinformatic analysis of the resulting datasets.

Your profile
  • Background in molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, or a related field (typically MSc degree, but BSc or PhD also considered)
  • Strong wet‑lab expertise and practical experience working with DNA and/or RNA
  • High accuracy and reliability in execution of experiments and operating lab equipment
  • Prior experience with NGS assays and/or genome sequencing instruments is a plus
  • Friendly, collaborative mindset, and motivation to work in an international, interdisciplinary environment
  • Team player with strong communication skills and a proactive "getting things done" mindset
  • Prior work experience in an academic core facility, a clinical laboratory, or a biotech / pharma company is a plus
  • Written and oral communication skills in English (German language skills are not required)

  • Flexible start date. Open-ended full-time contacts are available after an initial trial period. Support for relocating to Vienna is provided.
  • Normal working week is 40 hours. Core working time is the working time during which the employee must be present at the workplace. Monday to Thursday from 09:00 to 15:00 and Friday from 09:00 to 13:00. A maximum of 1 home office day per calendar week may be used.
