Organizational Setting

The Department of Management (MT) provides a "platform of services" that serves as the foundation for the successful delivery of the IAEA's scientific and technical programmes. Its mission statement is as follows: "MT is a partner and a business enabler that champions change and efficiency, leveraging a common purpose". Thus, among other support activities, it assists a scientific manager in recruiting the right expert, helps a technical officer coordinate the purchase of radiation equipment, and ensures that all Board documents are translated and distributed on a timely basis to Member States. One of the main functions assigned to the IAEA by its Statute is to foster the exchange of scientific and technical information and the dissemination of knowledge in the nuclear field among Member States. To facilitate the effective exchange and dissemination of information relevant to the IAEA's work and mandate, the Division of Conference and Document Services (MTCD) coordinates and supports the implementation of these activities for its users and clients, both internal and external, by organizing meetings and conferences, issuing documents in the six official IAEA languages i.e. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish, and editing, printing and distributing publications. The MTCD Language Services Section (LSS) is responsible for coordinating, managing and delivering language services for the Agency. The Section promotes multilingualism and maintains language standards of the organization through editing and translation of Policy Making Organ (PMO) documents, incoming and outgoing Secretariat documents and correspondence, web articles and advocacy material, Agency publications and other content. The Spanish Language Service is one of six language teams in the Language Services Section within the Division, responsible for the drafting, editing and translation of content, as required, into Spanish. Content is required to be of a high quality and often short deadlines have to be met.

Main Purpose

Reporting to the Section Head (Language Services Section) the Head of the Spanish Language Service revises and, if required, drafts, edits and translates a range of administrative, legal, economic, scientific and technical content. He/she has overall responsibility for all matters related to the Spanish language, which includes identifying and assessing new talent, training new language service freelancers in the Service team, as well as ensuring the high quality and timely delivery of content in Spanish.

Role

The Head of the Spanish Language Service plans and coordinates the work of the Spanish Language Service team, which includes Professional staff and freelancers, and assesses the competence of the team members, as well as new talent. He/she also provides input on the assessment of the linguistic competence of staff and freelancers required to carry out proofreading tasks in the Multilingual Output Production Team, as well as new talent, as required. The incumbent applies his/her analytical and linguistic skills to revising content produced by others and, if required, to drafting, editing or translating content. He/she checks the work of Spanish Language Service staff and freelancers for accuracy, completeness, comprehensibility, style and presentation and is responsible for the work done in the Service. The Head of the Spanish Language Service is also a substantive expert, leveraging knowledge and experience both in the subject matter of the Agency’s activities and in the Spanish language.

Functions / Key Results Expected

Plan and coordinate the work of the Spanish Language Service team. Revise content in Spanish produced by other staff members and freelancers in the Service team, covering a broad range of scientific, technical, administrative and legal subjects. Draft, translate and edit content, as required. Take authoritative decisions on issues related to terminology, language and subject matter, including assessing the competence of the Professional staff and freelancers in the Spanish Language Service team. When required, provide input on the assessment of the linguistic competence of staff and freelancers required to carry out proofreading tasks in the Multilingual Output Production Team, as well as new talent. Provide training and guidance to the Spanish Language Service team and, when required, linguistic training and guidance to the Multilingual Output Production Team. Implement innovative solutions and best-practice policies and standards as directed by the Section Head in the production of Spanish language content.

Language and Conference Services Translation Support Tools Expertise and knowledge of translation support tools is essential.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills

Advanced (Master's) university degree in translation, languages or related field. University (Bachelor's) degree in translation, languages or related field with two additional years of the relevant experience may be considered in lieu of advanced university degree.

Minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience in the field of translation.

Minimum of four years of experience in an international organization, public sector or non-profit organization, or equivalent.

Experience in supervising teams of translators would be an asset.

Knowledge and experience in using Microsoft Office software and IT translation tools, in particular Trados Studio and MultiTerm.

Excellent oral and written command of English and Spanish. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French and Russian) is an asset.
