Overview

Female tenure track assistant professorship in experimental solid-state physics

The Institute of Solid-State Physics at Graz University of Technology is seeking an outstanding scientist for a tenure track assistant professor position (exclusively open to female scientists) to foster and complement our research profile ( if.tugraz.at ). The experimental research shall be dedicated to the advancement of basic science, possible research activities include, but are not limited to, the advancement of innovative scattering techniques, deepening the understanding of the device physics of unconventional semiconducting materials, exploring 2D semiconductors, topological, and twisted 2D materials, the study of dynamic processes in solids (e.g. charge, spin, heat, or mass transport), quantum-defect sensing (for sensing electric, magnetic, strain, or thermal fields at the nanoscale), or the fabrication of novel materials with defined structures (potentially useful for applications like solar cells, etc.) to study their physical properties.

  • Required qualifications:
  • PhD in Physics or a closely related area (like Physical Chemistry)
  • Proficient spoken and written English.
  • Strong research program and indication of scientific independence, both through the successful acquisition of competitive third-party funding and publications without PhD supervisor.
Desired qualifications
  • Experience with, and interest in research at large-scale facilities (e.g., synchrotrons) as well as collaborations with industrial partners.
  • Interest in collaborations to strengthen the Graz Center of Physics, which is currently being established.
  • University level teaching experience and qualification for teaching in the area of condensed-matter physics at the Bachelor’s and Master’s level, along with the willingness to do so in German within five years of appointment.

Salary

We offer an annual gross salary of at least € 77,567.00 for a fulltime position. An overpayment based on qualification and experience is possible.

Notes

The successful candidate has to transfer her residence to the area of Graz.

The advertised position is a tenure-track career position exclusively open to female scientists for an initial period of 6 years (pursuant to § 99 (5) of the Universities Act). After the conclusion of a qualification agreement, the job holder is appointed as an Assistant Professor. After a positive evaluation of the qualification agreement, the position will be turned into a permanent position as Associate Professor.

As soon as the qualification agreement has been signed, the position will be paid according to category A2 of the collective agreement for employees of Austrian Universities. As of now, this corresponds to an initial gross salary of 5.808,20 € per month (14 times per year).

To ensure international representation of the research group and its work, excellent spoken and written competence in English is expected. Fluency in German or the willingness to acquire it between the first 2-3 years of service is required. The advertised position is a tenure track position. The initial employment will be as a University Assistant with a PhD. After the conclusion of a qualification agreement, the job holder is appointed as an Assistant Professor. After a positive evaluation of the qualification agreement, the position will be turned into a permanent position as an Associate Professor.
