An international organization focused on health and safety is seeking a Medical Director to lead the VIC Medical Service in Vienna. This role requires extensive experience in occupational health and the ability to provide high-quality health services to staff. Candidates must have a medical license and at least 15 years of clinical experience, ideally in international settings. Excellent communication skills in English are essential, and knowledge of other languages is advantageous.
This selection exercise may be used to generate a roster of pre-approved candidates to address future staffing needs for similar functions in any of the Departments and Offices of the Organization.

The Department of Management (MT) provides a ‘platform of services’ that serves as a foundation for the successful delivery of the IAEA’s scientific and technical programmes. Its mission statement is as follows: “MT is a partner and a business enabler that champions change and efficiency, leveraging a common purpose”. Thus, among other support activities, it assists a scientific manager in recruiting the right expert, helps a technical officer coordinate the purchase of radiation equipment, and ensures that all Board documents are translated and distributed on a timely basis to Member States.
The Division of Human Resources plans, acquires and manages human resources to help implement IAEA programmes. The Division delivers the full spectrum of HR services, including organizational development and planning, talent acquisition and development, performance management, and administration of compensation and benefits. The Division serves a multicultural workforce of approximately 2500 people from diverse scientific, technical, managerial and professional disciplines.
The VIC (Vienna International Centre) Medical Service serves the staff of all VIC Based Organizations (i.e. the IAEA, the United Nations Office of Vienna, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, and the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization), promotes the health of the staff of these organizations, provides for an occupationally safe and healthy work environment, and ensures that the UN Common System medical standards are maintained at the VIC. It renders services to approximately 5000 staff and dependants.
The primary responsibility of the Medical Director is to lead the VIC Medical Service and advise in all areas of occupational health. She/he also provides prompt and effective occupational health and medical services to the VBOs and delegates, and provides medical expertise and guidance to senior management of the VBOs. She/he also advises on occupational health and safety management (OHS) and ensures that all services of the VMS meet the highest international medical standards.
The Medical Director is a leader and manager, ensuring the competent, high-quality and cost-effective implementation of occupational health services, which also include mental health, and preventive health activities through organizational awareness; she/he is an adviser and coordinator to the senior management of the VBOs; and a promoter of a healthy and safe work environment.
Design, coordinate and implement the strategic plan for the VIC Medical Service. Provide advice to management on all occupational health matters and organizational approaches to medical and occupational health matters.
Manage the VIC Medical Service by: providing leadership and managing the human and financial resources; providing primary health care, including treatment and consultations; advising staff, their families and their managers on medical issues; managing the medical evacuation of UN common system field offices; overseeing and advising on disability cases; directing and supervising organization-specific requirements, including the medical surveillance of radiation workers.
Foster a culture of occupational health/safety, including through special medical projects and the conduct of health education and campaigns.
Collaborate with the Austrian public health authorities and relevant international health agencies for concerted and country-specific action in handling any emergencies up to pandemics, as well as quality health services and a high-quality patient referral system.
Oversee the operations of the VMS clinics and the staff counselling services, health promotion activities, health care management and crisis intervention emergency response, as well as performance of all medico-administrative functions.
Provide programmatic guidance and oversight for all medical-related projects, ensuring clinical quality, operational effectiveness, and alignment with organizational goals.
Support change initiatives and foster innovative reforms to maximize effectiveness and continuously assess the relevant programmatic needs and lead the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the VIC Medical Service projects to ensure effective delivery.

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $116095 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 63272*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy , education grant , relocation and repatriation expenses ; Other benefits include 6 weeks\' annual leave, home leave travel , pension plan and health insurance.
