Job summary

hireworks is seeking a Tech Lead, Platform (Data & AI) to shape the client’s technology strategy as they become more data-driven and AI-enabled. This highly hands-on role blends leadership with coding, owning platform architecture and mentoring a small team of engineers across data, AI/ML, and cloud infrastructure.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of engineering experience, with 2–3+ years in senior technical leadership or people management
• Strong software engineering experience with TypeScript and Python or Java, API design and microservices
• Experience making foundational architectural decisions in early-stage or greenfield environments
• Experience with large-scale datasets, ETL pipelines, or analytics platforms
• Cloud familiarity (AWS and/or GCP) and containerized infrastructure
• Strong collaboration and communication skills across product, engineering, and business teams
• Player-coach mentality: set technical direction and contribute hands-on while building out the team

Responsibilities

• Provide hands-on technical leadership across software development, data, AI/ML, and cloud infrastructure, mentoring a team of 3–5 engineers
• Own the platform architecture and establish pragmatic frameworks and engineering practices
• Lead build-vs-buy decisions and communicate tradeoffs to leadership
• Establish and evolve data architecture including pipelines, models, warehousing/lake infrastructure
• Identify and drive AI opportunities and productionize AI capabilities
• Own and operate AWS/GCP-based cloud systems with focus on scalability, cost, security, deployment, monitoring, reliability
• Remain hands-on on high-impact areas while guiding the team through complex engineering problems
• Plan for growth in product, data volumes, and team size and adapt architectures accordingly
• Document architecture decisions with ADRs and diagrams for maintainability
• Ensure SOC 2 compliance and security controls

About the Position

As Tech Lead, Platform (Data & AI), you'll play a pivotal role in shaping our client's technology strategy as the company evolves into a more data-driven, AI-enabled business. This is a highly hands-on role (combination of hands on coding and leadership) where you'll own platform architecture, mentor a small engineering team, and build the scalable data infrastructure needed to power future AI-driven products and customer insights. You'll work closely with Product and Business leadership to make critical technical decisions, modernize existing systems, and identify opportunities to leverage data and AI to transform the customer experience.

What You'll Do

Provide hands-on technical leadership across software development, data, AI/ML, and cloud infrastructure, while managing and mentoring a small team of 3-5 engineers.

Own the technical architecture of the platform, establishing pragmatic frameworks and engineering practices.

Lead strategic build-vs.-buy decisions, evaluating whether capabilities should be developed internally, integrated through third-party platforms, or leveraged through emerging AI/ML services. Clearly communicate the associated technical, financial, operational, and strategic tradeoffs to Product and Business leadership.

Establish and evolve the data architecture, providing technical direction across data pipelines, integrations, data models, warehousing/lake infrastructure, and the systems required to make data reliable and accessible.

Identify and drive opportunities to apply AI/ML, including integrating AI capabilities into products and workflows, evaluating emerging technologies, and partnering with product/business stakeholders to turn AI opportunities into production-ready solutions.

Own and operate cloud-based systems across AWS and Google Cloud, making thoughtful decisions around infrastructure, scalability, cost, security, deployment, monitoring, and reliability.

Remain deeply hands-on, contributing code and technical implementation to the highest-impact areas while helping the team solve complex engineering problems.

Build for the next stage of the organization, anticipating how product growth, increasing data volumes, customer needs, and a growing engineering team will affect today's technical decisions.

About You

7+ years of engineering experience, with at least 2-3 years in a senior technical leadership and/or people management capacity

Strong software engineering experience with TypeScript and Python or Java, as well as API design and microservices architecture

Experience making foundational architectural decisions in an early-stage or greenfield environment

Previous work with large scale datasets, ETL pipelines, or analytics platforms

Strong familiarity with cloud environments (AWS and/or GCP) and containerized infrastructure

Strong collaboration and communication skills - able to work effectively across product, engineering, and business teams

Ability to act as a player-coach: set technical direction and contribute hands-on while building out the team and establishing the processes that will scale with it.

Passion for technical documentation practices, including architecture diagrams, ADRs, and other artifacts that make technical decisions clear and maintainable.

Working knowledge of SOC 2 compliance requirements and security controls

Bonus Qualifications:

AI/ML and LLM fluency, including building AI/ML features into products.

Experience building platforms or tools for non-technical users, especially in AI/ML, automation, or workflow spaces
