Proofpoint is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to strengthen our D1X back-end data pipelines and services that power our security products. You will lead design, mentor engineers, and collaborate with stakeholders to build scalable solutions across distributed systems.
The role emphasizes Python with Java/Golang versatility, cloud experience, and strong ownership in a remote LATAM-friendly setup. You will drive data quality, observability, and reliability across deployment environments.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field.
- 8+ years of professional software or data engineering experience, with at least 4 years on cloud data platforms.
- Strong Python programming skills; proficiency in Java and Golang is a plus.
- Deep understanding of highly distributed architectures and secure APIs.
- Cloud experience (AWS, GCP, Azure).
- Experience with Docker and Kubernetes is preferred.
- Familiar with observability/monitoring tools like Grafana and Kibana.
- Proven ability to collaborate with agile teams and deliver results.
- Excellent communication, planning and organizational skills.

The Security Products and Services Group is the core of Proofpoint's success, and you will be contributing to our efforts to do what we do, even better. As a Staff Software Engineer on the D1X pipeline team, you will be focused on the back‑end systems that power our industry leading products focused on email Security. These highly sophisticated systems are responsible for protecting the corporate email platform of some of the largest brands in the world. We are looking for someone who is an outstanding team player with a positive attitude and high energy, to help us deliver state‑of‑the‑art products.
- Lead efforts to design, implement software and support systems using industry best‑practices
- Serve as a technical leader and mentor – conduct design reviews, guide junior engineers, and influence the team's technical roadmap
- Collaborate with engineers and business stakeholders to identify and implement software solutions to business problems
- Establish and enforce data quality standards – implement validation frameworks, anomaly detection, and SLA‑driven alerting to ensure data reliability
- Troubleshoot and resolve production incidents, perform root‑cause analysis, and drive preventive improvements
- Define and drive engineering best practices: code reviews, CI/CD for data pipelines, and DataOps principles
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or similar technical field of study
- 8+ years of professional software or data engineering experience, with at least 4 years focused on cloud data platforms
- Strong Python programming skills. Proficiency in coding in any other language, preferably Java and Golang
- Strong understanding of highly distributed architecture
- Experience working with secured APIs (REST, GraphQL, etc)
- Cloud computing experience (AWS, GCP, Azure, or similar)
- Experience in Docker and Kubernetes, preferred
- Experience working with observability and monitoring tools (Grafana, Kibana, etc)
- Strong experience working with agile development teams
- Understanding of best practices in performance tuning

We're looking for a highly experienced Senior / Staff Software Engineer who can combine strong software engineering fundamentals with this new way of building software.
This is not a traditional AI/ML Engineer role .
You won't be training machine learning models or working primarily on Data Science. Instead, you'll be engineering production software, navigating a large existing codebase, making architectural decisions, improving reliability, and using AI coding agents to dramatically increase development velocity.
The ideal person is a builder first : highly technical, pragmatic, product‑oriented, low‑ego, and comfortable taking ownership of complex systems.
- Navigate, understand, and evolve a large existing production codebase.
- Design and implement new product capabilities across a complex SaaS platform.
- Make pragmatic architectural and system design decisions as the product continues to scale.
- Identify technical debt, architectural risks, reliability issues, and opportunities for improvement.
- Use Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Copilot, or similar AI coding agents extensively throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Leverage AI agents to explore codebases, design implementations, generate and refactor code, debug issues, write tests, and accelerate delivery.
- Build and evolve backend services, APIs, integrations, data models, and application workflows.
- Contribute across the application stack when needed.
- Strengthen automated testing, maintainability, observability, reliability, and production readiness.
- Improve development workflows, tooling, automation, and engineering practices.

- Experience building AI‑powered SaaS products.
