Responsibilities

Role Context

The Veterinary Technician supports the Animal Health and Science team by providing reliable diagnostic and clinical assistance for a diverse population of dolphins, fur seals, marine fish, and freshwater species. Approximately half of the position is focused on clinical biology and laboratory diagnostics, making technical precision and rigorous sample handling central to the role. Working directly with veterinarians, water quality technicians, and animal husbandry teams, the technician contributes to preventive medicine, emergency response, clinical procedures, research, and animal welfare initiatives. Accurate laboratory results, well-maintained equipment, and disciplined clinical support directly influence the quality and timeliness of veterinary decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

• Process blood and other diagnostic samples collected from marine mammals, fish, and other aquatic species.
• Perform cytological examinations and manual complete blood count procedures.
• Conduct aerobic, anaerobic, and fungal microbiological cultures.
• Operate chemical analyzers and spectrophotometry equipment for diagnostic testing, including ELISA-related procedures.
• Prepare and package diagnostic specimens for shipment to external laboratories.
• Maintain accurate sample identification, laboratory records, and testing documentation.
• Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain hematology and clinical chemistry analyzers.
• Support the use and maintenance of endoscopy, ultrasound, radiology, sterilization, and spectrophotometry equipment.
• Prepare, formulate, and dispense medications according to veterinary instructions.
• Administer prescribed treatments to hospitalized animals and other patients.
• Maintain pharmaceutical, clinical supply, and laboratory inventories.
• Monitor stock levels and coordinate timely replenishment of medications and consumables.
• Prepare equipment and treatment areas for veterinary procedures.
• Assist veterinarians during examinations, diagnostic procedures, treatments, and interventions.
• Support necropsy procedures and prepare required instruments and sampling materials.
• Perform post-mortem sample collection when veterinarians are unavailable and when authorized by established protocols.

Ideal Profile

The successful candidate should be a certified Laboratory Technician or Veterinary Technician, or hold a relevant master 's degree focused on laboratory work. A minimum of 3 years of experience is required in diagnostic laboratory practice, domestic animal veterinary practice, research laboratory work, or a comparable clinical environment. Previous experience with wildlife or marine animals is beneficial but not mandatory. Candidates should have strong laboratory discipline, excellent organizational ability, and exceptional attention to detail. The role requires confidence working with diagnostic samples, technical equipment, pharmaceuticals, and veterinary procedures. The position is suited to someone who remains positive and methodical in a changing clinical environment.
