Job summary

Space42 is seeking a Senior Engineer – Software Development to own the React frontend of a production system at a critical client site. You will maintain the state architecture, ensure performance, accessibility, and responsiveness, and extend the UI in line with established patterns.

Additionally, you will contribute to the API layer when frontend priorities permit, collaborating with backend services to deliver reliable, scalable full‑stack features in a live environment.

Qualifications

Job Description

As a Senior Engineer – Software Development you will take ownership of the React development and delivery of an existing production system operating at a critical client site, while maintaining working proficiency across the full technology stack. The role is responsible for maintaining and extending the application's state architecture in line with established development patterns, ensuring the user interface remains performant, responsive, and accessible under real client usage conditions, and diagnosing as well as resolving frontend performance issues in a live, mission-critical environment. As a secondary responsibility, the Senior Engineer will also contribute to the API layer when frontend priorities permit, supporting seamless integration across the application stack and overall system reliability.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain full-stack solutions, with primary ownership of the React frontend, ensuring high-quality, scalable, and maintainable application features.
• Maintain and enhance the application's state management architecture, adhering to established patterns and best practices while avoiding the introduction of conflicting approaches.
• Monitor, profile, and optimise frontend rendering and application performance under real-world client usage conditions, delivering responsive and reliable user experiences.
• Embed accessibility as a core development principle by ensuring all user interface enhancements comply with WCAG standards and accessibility best practices from design through implementation.
• Apply rigorous change management and quality assurance practices to all releases, recognizing the critical nature of the live production environment and minimizing operational risk.
• Collaborate closely with backend services and APIs, consuming, transforming, and integrating data effectively to deliver seamless and intuitive frontend experiences.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of hands‑on experience with React, including a strong understanding of state management and architecture within complex, enterprise‑scale applications, leveraging component state, Hooks, Context API, and modern React patterns.
• Strong proficiency in TypeScript, with the ability to develop and maintain scalable, type‑safe, and maintainable frontend applications.
• Proven experience identifying, analyzing, and optimizing frontend performance issues in production environments, ensuring responsive and reliable user experiences.
• Strong knowledge of web accessibility standards (WCAG), with practical experience implementing accessible design and development practices rather than solely conducting compliance audits.
• Demonstrated ability to quickly understand, maintain, and enhance existing codebases, including large and unfamiliar applications with established development patterns.
• Working knowledge of Java development, with the capability to contribute to backend services, APIs, and integrations when required to support full‑stack delivery.

Additional Requirements

• Experience working within an established, live production system rather than greenfield development
• Comfortable following existing architectural patterns and conventions rather than introducing new ones
• Awareness of the change‑management discipline a live, critical client deployment demands
• Understanding of how mapping/GIS systems work
• Experience using AI‑assisted coding tools (e.g. GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code) to accelerate delivery across projects, while retaining full ownership and review of what ships
