Job description
JOB PURPOSE

The Senior Electrical Engineer will be responsible for engineering of substation equipment and overseeing the execution of engineering deliverables (electrical) for large-scale transmission and distribution projects. Additionally, the engineer is responsible for conducting feasibility studies, cost estimates, and risk assessments for electrical engineering projects.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical Support
  • Prepare the list of engineering deliverables upon contract award, prepare project drawing list, review and finalize Request for Quotations with technical requirements as per scope of the project.
  • Evaluate technical offers from vendors to check compliance in line with project requirements prior to order placement.
  • Provide technical support during installation, testing, and commissioning of T&D equipment (transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, etc.).
  • Prepare specifications for purchases of electrical equipment and materials.
  • Prepare electrical systems specifications, technical drawings or topographical maps, ensuring compliance with standards, codes and customer requirements.
  • Estimate material, labor or construction costs for budget preparation.
  • Prepare and issue inquiries for subcontracted materials / equipment, evaluating the offers.
  • Place orders to sub-contractors and coordinate on the design delivery & site works until project completion.
  • Apply engineering calculation to complete engineering tasks such as relay co-ordination, Auxiliary transformer sizing, and CT Sizing & HT & LT Cable Sizing calculation.
  • Apply engineering documents to complete engineering tasks such as Power Cable Schedule, Control Cable schedule & Preparation of Cable BOQ.
  • Ensure that installations and operations follow the standards and customer requirements.
  • Identify and assess additional scope requirements, communicate their impacts to the customer, and implement necessary changes through change notices, red markup drawings, illustrations, presentations to ensure project continuity and alignment with objectives.
  • Prepare Work Method Statements; Installation related drawings to facilitate smooth execution of site works.
  • Prepare markup drawings correctly indicating each interface to finalize the cable interconnection schedule.
  • Provide support to planning engineers in preparation of cost claims and evidence to support project time extension claims which were related to engineering deliverables.
  • Supervising and training project team members.
Project Execution
  • Assuring product quality by coordinating with respective manufacturers / vendors for designing electrical equipment as per contract scope & technical specifications.
  • Assist in project planning, scheduling, and coordination of tasks for ongoing projects.
  • Participating in progress meetings & provide inputs for scheduling.
  • Liaising with clients, consultants and sub-contractors; participating in technical discussions; obtaining approvals in timely manner as requested by the Project Manager / Engineering Manager.
  • Ensure compliance with national and international standards, including safety and regulatory guidelines.
Research & Development
  • Stay up to date with the latest advancements in transmission and distribution technologies and sustainable energy solutions
  • Contribute to optimization of engineering based on lapses identified in ongoing jobs / previous projects.
Field Work
  • Conduct site visits for inspections, data collection, and troubleshooting of electrical systems.
  • Support in the preparation of reports based on field findings and communicate with project teams for follow-up actions.
  • Coordinate and prepare red-marks and As-built drawing and documents.
Collaboration & Communication
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including civil, and mechanical, to ensure integrated solutions.
  • Coordinate all site activities: erection; testing; commissioning after the equipment is delivered to site.
  • Coordinate with testing team and consultants to prepare the testing schedule and testing activities.
  • Coordinate with Civil and MEP teams to provide pipe sleeves and openings at floor, wall, and roofs in line with approved drawings.
  • Communicate technical findings and project updates to senior engineers and stakeholders through reports and presentations.
Reporting
  • Prepare and develop comprehensive reports as advised by the Engineering Manager.
  • Provide all relevant reports as required by the Project Manager and Engineering Manager within the time frame.
  • Undertake additional tasks or responsibilities as may be reasonably requested by the Engineering Manager, within the scope or works
QUALIFICATION & EXPERIENCE
Educational Qualification
  • Bachelors degree in electrical engineering.
Experience
  • Minimum of 15+ years of experience as an Electrical Engineer, from the Electric Power Industry in the GCC / UAE.
  • Thorough experience in the equipment; engineering, project & site co-ordination of substation equipment on turnkey projects.
SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE
  • Strong understanding of electrical substation equipment, particularly in high voltage (HV), Low Voltage (MV) substations, and distribution networks.
  • Perform engineering support tasks such as review of technical specification and scope requirements, preparation of technical proposals, review of scheme drawings, review of cable schedules, preparation of interface drawings, preparation of load lists and cable sizing calculations, work method statements and any other engineering supporting documents for execution of site works.
  • Familiar with software tools such as MS excel, AutoCAD, ETAP, MATLAB, or other power systems analysis tools would be an added advantage.
  • Understanding of industry standards (IEEE, IEC) and local regulatory codes / clients technical specifications.
  • Strong analytical, leadership and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working in a team-oriented environment.
  • Eagerness to learn and adapt to new technologies and methodologies.
