Role Context
This position supports the safe and economical delivery of complex onshore gas wells from initial engineering through drilling, completion, intervention, and final well lifecycle decisions. The Senior Drilling Engineer works closely with drilling teams, subsurface specialists, production operations, rig personnel, service contractors, and technology providers to develop technically robust well programs. Particular emphasis is placed on well trajectory optimization, completion design, drilling performance, well integrity, operational risk, rig readiness, and cost-effective execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare drilling, completion, workover, and well intervention procedures in accordance with approved technical and HSE requirements.
- Optimize well programs to improve operational efficiency, technical performance, and overall well economics.
- Design well trajectories and establish appropriate well profiles for planned drilling objectives.
- Optimize drill strings and bottom hole assemblies according to formation, trajectory, and operational requirements.
- Review drilling parameters and engineering assumptions to improve well delivery performance.
- Plan and oversee completion activities associated with onshore gas wells.
- Support execution of completion operations at the rig site and address technical issues arising during implementation.
- Conduct technical reviews of completion designs before operational execution.
- Evaluate well designs and recommend technically suitable and cost-effective alternatives.
- Assess drilling, completion, and intervention risks and establish appropriate mitigation measures.
- Review operational hazards and ensure controls are incorporated into well programs and execution plans.
- Investigate troubled, damaged, or underperforming wells and identify potential causes of performance deterioration.
- Develop remedial recommendations designed to restore or improve well productivity.
- Collaborate with drilling and subsurface teams during well planning and execution.
- Coordinate with specialist vendors and service contractors to ensure technical and operational requirements are understood.
- Manage well delivery using a full lifecycle approach covering design, drilling, completion, intervention, performance, and future integrity requirements.
- Evaluate opportunities to introduce new drilling and completion technologies that improve performance or reduce cost.
- Prepare rig mobilization and demobilization plans.
- Develop rig orientation and operational readiness requirements before commencing well activities.
- Prepare wellhead, casing, and cementing programs designed to maintain well integrity throughout the operating lifecycle.
- Review casing design and cementing requirements against well conditions and operational objectives.
- Verify technical aspects of proposed well completion designs and identify areas requiring modification.
- Prepare well abandonment programs when wells reach the appropriate lifecycle stage.
- Develop associated technical scopes and cost estimates for abandonment activities.
- Coordinate availability of contracted services, specialist personnel, and shared resources required for well execution.
- Consult with service contractors and Production Operations teams to ensure resources are available according to drilling schedules.
- Track operational dependencies that could affect drilling or completion progress.
- Support resolution of service, equipment, or resource constraints before they impact rig performance.
- Promote effective collaboration among rig teams, drilling personnel, service providers, and technical disciplines.
