Job summary

AtkinsRéalis in the United Arab Emirates is seeking a Senior Resident Engineer – Civil (Substations) to lead supervision of civil and structural works for high‑voltage substations. You will ensure construction aligns with design specs, quality, safety, and schedule, acting as on-site representative coordinating with contractors and stakeholders.

The role requires 15+ years in civil construction supervision, with 10+ years on 132kV+ substations, and experience with GIS/AIS substations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering required.
• Professional Engineer/Chartered Engineer certification is advantageous.
• Minimum 15 years of civil engineering and construction supervision experience.
• Minimum 10 years on 132 kV and above substation projects.
• GIS and AIS substations experience mandatory.
• Consultancy/site supervision experience preferred in UAE/GCC utilities.

Responsibilities

• Supervise civil works for GIS/AIS substations including control buildings, foundations, trenches, walls, roads and utilities.
• Monitor contractor performance, progress and compliance with drawings and specs.
• Review and approve material submittals, shop drawings, RFIs and method statements.
• Ensure QA/QC and HSE compliance across works.
• Coordinate with electrical, mechanical, protection and commissioning teams.
• Liaise with clients, contractors and utility authorities.
• Review progress reports, variations and contractor claims.
• Support testing, commissioning, handover and close-out activities.

Job Description Overview

As a Resident Engineer – Civil (Substations), you will be responsible for leading and supervising all civil works associated with substation construction projects.

You will ensure that projects are delivered in accordance with design specifications, quality standards, safety regulations, and project timelines. Acting as the key on-site representative, you will coordinate with contractors, consultants, and stakeholders to ensure efficient execution and successful completion of high-voltage substation projects.

Your role - Civil to lead the supervision of civil and structural works for high-voltage substation projects. The role involves ensuring all construction activities are executed in compliance with project specifications, quality standards, safety requirements, and utility regulations.

Key Responsibilities

• Supervise all civil works related to GIS/AIS substations, including:
  • Control buildings
  • Transformer foundations
  • Gantry foundations
  • Cable trenches and duct banks
  • Boundary walls and fencing
  • Roads, drainage, and underground utilities
  • Oil containment pits and firewater structures
• Monitor contractor performance, progress, and compliance with approved drawings and specifications.
• Review and approve material submittals, shop drawings, RFIs, and method statements.
• Ensure compliance with QA/QC procedures and HSE requirements.
• Coordinate with electrical, mechanical, protection, and commissioning teams.
• Liaise with clients, contractors, and utility authorities.
• Review progress reports, variations, and contractor claims.

About you
