Role Context
The Post‑Doctoral Associate will join the Kamei Reverse Bioengineering Laboratory within the Divisions of Science and Engineering. The laboratory uses integrated biological and engineering approaches to recreate, observe, and analyze developmental processes that are difficult to study directly in humans. The appointed researcher will build nano‑ and micro‑engineered platforms that interface with human stem cells, investigate cellular and molecular mechanisms controlling development and disease, and translate experimental findings into new approaches for regenerative medicine and therapeutic discovery. The role covers the complete research cycle, from experimental conception and device fabrication to data interpretation, publication, mentoring, and grant development.
Key Responsibilities
- Design innovative research projects investigating human development, organ formation, embryogenesis, and disease progression.
- Develop nano‑ and micro‑engineered platforms that support stem‑cell culture, differentiation, observation, and controlled experimentation.
- Fabricate research devices and optimize their physical, biological, and operational performance.
- Establish and maintain human stem‑cell cultures using rigorous aseptic and quality‑control procedures.
- Design differentiation protocols for relevant cell types, tissues, organoids, or developmental models.
- Investigate cellular signaling, molecular regulation, tissue organization, and pathological mechanisms.
- Apply fluorescence microscopy and high‑resolution imaging methods to monitor cellular behavior and developmental processes.
- Generate, process, and interpret single‑cell or bulk omics datasets when required by the research program.
- Use bioinformatics workflows to identify biological patterns, pathways, molecular signatures, and potential therapeutic targets.
- Integrate experimental biology, engineering, imaging, and computational findings into coherent scientific conclusions.
- Lead experiments from initial hypothesis development through validation, analysis, and publication.
- Maintain reproducible research records, laboratory protocols, datasets, code, and device specifications.
- Prepare manuscripts for high‑impact peer‑reviewed journals and present findings at academic conferences.
- Contribute technical content, preliminary data, and research concepts to grant proposals.
- Mentor graduate and undergraduate researchers in laboratory methods, experimental planning, and scientific communication.
- Collaborate with scientists and engineers across disciplines to expand the laboratory’s research capabilities.
Ideal Profile
- PhD in Science, Engineering, Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Developmental Biology, Biotechnology, or a closely related field.
- Doctoral degree awarded before the employment start date.
- Applicant must be within the first five years after receiving the PhD.
- Demonstrated expertise in at least one relevant area such as device design, microfabrication, nanofabrication, stem‑cell biology, developmental biology, fluorescence imaging, omics, or bioinformatics.
- Practical experience designing and executing complex biological or engineering experiments.
- Strong understanding of experimental controls, reproducibility, data integrity, and laboratory safety.
- Ability to analyze biological mechanisms using quantitative, imaging, computational, or molecular approaches.
- Research publication record appropriate for an early‑career post‑doctoral appointment.
- Strong scientific writing and presentation skills.
- Ability to manage several experimental priorities and move projects toward publishable outcomes.
- Collaborative mindset suited to an interdisciplinary science and engineering laboratory.
- Experience mentoring students or junior researchers is advantageous.
