Job description
Job Purpose

The Marine Engineer is responsible for the operational maintenance and adaptation of all marine instrumentation at the SMSRC. This role maintenance, and optimization of Marine Operations equipment, including all electronic and mechanical field-research instrumentation, and related hardware. The position ensures that facilities support cutting‑edge marine science, comply with safety and environmental standards, and enable impactful research, education, and outreach programs. The role may also involve logistics of research projects and their smooth implementation, and will be instrumental in delivering the SMSRC and UKF mission to become a centre of excellence for marine research and delivering research impact.

Key Accountabilities
  • Help operate, manage, adapt and maintain the oceanographic and marine science equipment inventory at the Marine Ops facility.
  • Assist in maintaining the electronics- and mechanical workshop to best‑practice standards
  • Be proactive in the writing and maintenance of specific standard operating procedures.
  • Establish and maintain equipment maintenance register
  • Take part in field operations as field technician when needed
  • Stay up‑to‑date with all required training
  • Maintain records of up‑to‑date equipment testing and consumables logistics
  • Liaise with the Dive Safety Officer and senior leadership
  • Be a role model for lab and field safety. This includes adhering to all PPE and other safety requirements

Qualification & Experience

Advanced electronics technician qualifications in marine electronics, robotics, and mechanical engineering or related field; exellent troubleshooting skills, ideally also in telemetry.

Demonstrated experience working in marine and scientific environments using attained qualifications.
