Responsibilities

  • Provide professional assistance to library users in person, by phone, email, and online channels, including guidance on services, policies, facilities, and resources.
  • Manage circulation desk activities: check-in/check-out, renewals, reservations, account management, and issue resolution.
  • Provide basic reference and information assistance to locate materials, databases, and electronic resources.
  • Support library engagement activities such as orientations, information literacy sessions, and workshops.
  • Maintain accurate user records in the library management system.

Job description

The American University in the Emirates (AUE) is seeking a highly organized, professional, and detail-orientedLibrarian (Patron Services) to provide comprehensive patron, administrative, and operational support within the University Library.

The position is responsible for providing professional patron services, circulation management, user support, basic reference assistance, collection accessibility and maintenance, library system support, documentation, and other library services that contribute to an effective and student-centered learning environment.

Job Purpose

The Librarian (Patron Services) is responsible for providing effective and professional services to library users, managing circulation activities, supporting reference and information services, maintaining library collections and stacks, assisting with library systems and digital services, and ensuring accurate documentation and smooth day-to-day library operations.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Library and Information Science or a related field from an accredited university.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of relevant library experience, including experience in an academic library.
  • Working knowledge of Integrated Library Management Systems (ILMS).
  • Knowledge of library circulation procedures, reference services, collection management, and user support practices.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong customer-service orientation and the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, and other library users.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide professional assistance to library users in person, by phone, email, and online communication channels, including guidance on library services, policies, procedures, facilities, and available resources.
  • Manage and provide services at the circulation desk, including check-in, check-out, renewals, reservations, user account management, and resolution of routine user issues.
  • Provide basic reference and information assistance by guiding users in locating library materials, databases, electronic resources, and other academic information resources.
  • Support user engagement activities, including library orientations, information literacy sessions, workshops, and awareness programs that promote effective use of library resources and services.
  • Create, update, and maintain accurate user records and patron information in the library management system in accordance with established procedures.
  • Assist users in locating library materials and provide guidance on collection organization, shelving locations, classification arrangements, and library facilities.
  • Monitor and maintain the physical arrangement and accessibility of library collections, including shelf reading, stack maintenance, shifting, shelving, and identifying misplaced or incorrectly shelved materials.
  • Process returned library materials, inspect item conditions, verify and process applicable fines in accordance with library policies, and ensure materials are properly prepared and made available for circulation.
  • Support the acquisition and processing of new library materials, including receiving, verification, basic technical processing, labeling, and preparation of materials for circulation.
  • Prepare, update, and maintain library service documentation, reports, procedures, statistics, and operational records as assigned.
  • Assist in monitoring library service quality by collecting and reviewing user feedback, identifying service issues, and recommending improvements to enhance patron satisfaction and the overall library experience.
  • Support the implementation and day-to-day maintenance of library systems, applications, and digital services, including troubleshooting basic technical issues and coordinating with relevant teams when required.
  • Follow up with faculty, students, and staff regarding overdue materials and support end-of-semester collection management and circulation activities.
  • Assist with library inventory, collection maintenance, and periodic audits as assigned.
  • Maintain a professional, welcoming, inclusive, and service-oriented environment for all library users.
  • Perform any other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
